Those declarations were accompanied by announcements from General Motors, Google’s Waymo, Toyota, and Honda that they’d be making self-driving cars by 2020. Elon Musk forecast that Tesla would do it by 2018 — and then, when that failed, by 2020.

"It really looked like I had plenty of time to go across," an anguished Florida truck driver said in an interview transcript released by the National Transportation Safety Board this week. Unfortunately, he was wrong.
Richard Wood was driving a semi truck on the morning of Friday, March 1, 2019. He pulled onto Florida's SR 7 from a driveway, intending to make a left turn. But as he crossed to the opposite lane, a Tesla Model 3 belonging to Jeremy Banner crashed into the side of the truck. Banner's Tesla went under Wood's trailer, shearing off the roof and killing Banner.

The case attracted wide attention because Banner had engaged Tesla's Autopilot technology. Not only that, the circumstances of Banner's death were almost identical to the first Autopilot-related death in the United States: the death of Josh Brown in 2016.
The truck driver's interview transcript was one of many documents the NTSB released this week related to two fatal crashes involving Tesla's Autopilot.

The documents about Banner's case provide a lot of new information about the circumstances of his death.

Jaguar Land Rover is the latest automaker to unveil an electric and “autonomy ready” shuttle pod designed for shared use in urban settings. “Project Vector” is just a concept, but the UK carmaker said it hopes to have some version of the vehicle on the road for testing by 2021.

For now, the automaker is keeping most of its specs under wraps.
Unlike GM and Honda’s recently unveiled Cruise Origin autonomous shuttle, JLR’s concept has a driver’s seat and traditional controls for human use. But the vehicle is built to conform to future use cases in which autonomous vehicles are more prominent.

Self-driving shuttles are becoming a somewhat common sight, with companies like Optimus Ride, Navya, and May Mobility operating small fleets in fixed routes in cities around the world. But it’s also the kind of business that can be extremely difficult to get right.

Driverless vehicle technology has the potential to transform industries — and indeed, it already has. Stockholm, Sweden-based Einride has raised over $32 million for freight systems that transport logs, shipping containers, and other cargo autonomously.

As for Outrider, previously Azevtec (Autonomous, Zero-Emission Vehicle Technologies), it hopes to do for yard trucks what Waymo did for ride-hailing and Einride did for trucking.

“Logistics yards offer a well-defined environment and a set of discrete, repetitive tasks that make the ideal use case for autonomous technology. But today’s yards are also complex, often chaotic environments, with many manual tasks. This is why a systems approach is necessary to automate every major task in the yard,” said founder and CEO Andrew Smith.

A little electrical tape has caused quite the stir.
This week, McAfee security researchers released 18 months worth of research that demonstrates the ease with which a "smart" autonomous vehicle can be tricked into misreading and accelerating past speed limits.

But there were some major caveats to the research. Mainly, that for self-driving vehicles (i.e., cars reliant on computer control for driving versus a hybrid system like Tesla's that relies on humans and software for piloting) this weakness discovered in older Teslas isn't an actual issue.
But before freaking out about all the ways self-driving and automated vehicles are doomed, first consider that the McAfee Advanced Threat Research team tested this model hack on two 2016 Teslas; newer Tesla models have since stopped using Mobileye cameras in favor of the company's own proprietary cameras.

Also, the version of the Mobileye camera used in those models has been updated and that version is no longer susceptible to the hack.

Russian driverless tech company Cognitive Pilot sets sights on IPO

Russian technology start-up Cognitive Pilot, which makes components for driverless vehicles, is considering an initial public offering (IPO) after 2023, its chief executive told Reuters.
The company has already attracted investment from top Russian lender Sberbank, which has bought a 30% stake, though it gave no indication on a valuation of the business.

Cognitive Pilot develops components for self-driving cars as well as autonomous control systems for agricultural machinery, trains and trams. It lists state rail operator Russian Railways, farming conglomerate Rusagro and South Korean auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis among its clients.

“The first IPOs in this sector will be highly successful. It’s important not to sleep through the moment,” Chief Executive Olga Uskova said.

Developers of self-driving cars are amping up criticism of a California reporting requirement on test data, saying the data could mislead, as the state prepares to release the latest results for 2019.

Companies such as General Motors Co's Cruise and startup Aurora have said the metric, called disengagements, is not an accurate or relevant way to measure their technical progress, even though it is widely used to do just that.
California requires all companies testing self-driving vehicles on public roads to submit an annual report on disengagements and what caused them, "written in plain language."

Self-driving companies say the disengagement data can draw unfair comparisons between companies and their self-driving technology.

Oe of the biggest challenges for self-driving is unpredictable variables such as weather, which can affect the journey. A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (MIT-CSAIL) seems to have found a solution to this vexing problem.

The researchers have developed technology that will let self-driving cars “see” through snow and fog, using a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Using the technology, the car systems will be able to see beneath the surface of the snow and map routes accordingly.

“Self-driving cars are likely to be safer, on average, than human-driven cars. But they may fail in new and catastrophic ways that a human driver could prevent. This project is designing a new architecture for a highly dependable self-driving car,” CSAIL stated on its website.

GM’s Cruise inched closer toward a commercial robo-taxi service this week with the acquisition of a permit from the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC). A year ago, Lyft submitted a report to the California Department of Motor Vehicles that summed up its 2018 autonomous vehicle testing activity in a single, short paragraph.

“Lyft Inc. did not operate any vehicles in autonomous mode on California public roads during the reporting period,” the letter read. “As such, Lyft Inc. has no autonomous mode disengagements to report.”
The 2019 data tells a different story. Lyft had 19 autonomous vehicles testing on public roads in California in 2019, according to data released earlier this week by the CA DMV. Those 19 vehicles, which operated during the reporting period of December 2018 to November 2019, drove nearly 43,000 miles in autonomous mode.

The report is the latest sign that Lyft is trying to ramp up its self-driving vehicle program known as Level 5.

England’s Five (formerly known as FiveAI), one of the more ambitious companies in the space, is moving away from its original plan, of designing its own fully self-driving cars, and then running fleets of them in its own transportation service.

Anthony Levandowski, former Google engineer and a pioneer of self-driving car tech, was ordered Wednesday to pay $179 million to Google, according to Reuters. The multi-million dollar fine is over Levandowski quitting his job and breaking his contract with the tech giant.

Levandowski left Google in 2016 to start his own self-driving truck company, which was quickly acquired by Uber for $680 million. These actions set off a chain of events that led to Google's autonomous vehicle unit, Waymo, suing Uber over alleged theft of self-driving car trade secrets.

"Today the court has posted to the docket its final decision, confirming the award in Google's favor and issuing a significant judgment against Levandowski," a Waymo spokeswoman said in an email.

Tesla plans to release more features to expand its full self-driving capabilities later this month, according to CEO Elon Musk.
While Musk didn’t specify which features would come out later this month, there are a few features that have been “on deck” for quite some time now.

For more than a year now, Tesla has been saying that “automatic driving on city streets” and the ability to respond to traffic lights was coming “soon.” In fact, that same “coming later this year” statement was on their website last year. So those features are currently behind schedule.
But Musk’s announcement today suggests that those features may be rolled out this month.
