Today, Nubia has announced its latest gaming smartphone, the Red Magic 5G, as one of the first smartphones with a 144Hz display.

The Red Magic 5G is just the latest in a line of gaming smartphones from Nubia that, frankly, are pretty great! With this 2020 model, we’re looking at updated specs, a refreshed design, and more, but the clear highlight is that display.

As implied by the name, too, the Red Magic 5G supports 5G connectivity thanks to its Snapdragon 865 chipset. That chip also delivers some upgrades for performance, too. Paired with it you’ll find either 8GB, 12GB, or 16GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage. Together, all of those should make a speedy smartphone. It ought to last a while, too, with a 4,500 mAh battery under the hood that charges at up to 55W over USB-C.

Nubia Releases the Red Magic 5G Smartphone in China

In addition, Nubia has added to the phone a new cooling system. Its board feaatures an L-shaped liquid cooling tube on the back, a large area of thermally conductive gel on the front of it, a multilayer graphite thermally conductive film, a large-sized thermally conductive copper foil, a built-in fan, and a newly designed air duct.
The Red Magic 5G has three rear cameras. The primary sensor is a 64MP Sony IMX686 camera and the other two sensors are an 8MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP macro camera. In front is an 8MP camera for selfies.

The device also supports a 55W (PD3.0 PPS) fast charging solution that takes only 15 minutes to charge its 4500mAh to 56% and 40 minutes for a full charge.

The Red Magic 5G was announced in early March as Nubia’s latest gaming-focused smartphone. The brand is no stranger to this growing market, and the Red Magic 5G brings a few new features to the fold. The device is now available for prospective buyers to pre-order and will be available globally on April 21st.

The headlining feature of the Red Magic 5G is not the 5G support that gives it its name. Instead, it is the fact that is the first smartphone on the market with a 144Hz refresh rate display. Of course, as with any other high refresh rate display on smartphones these days, it’s only used to its full potential if certain applications.

Nubia's gaming smartphone brand, Red Magic, has made some really interesting phones over the past couple of years, including the Red Magic 3 and 3S, both of which I reviewed last year. This year, the company came out with the Red Magic 5G, and it's both very similar and very different from previous Red Magic phones.

On the inside, the Red Magic philosophy is absolutely still here. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, this year bringing 5G to the table, and starting at 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.0 storage, performance is still very much a focus.
This year, we're also getting big news for the display - for the first time in any smartphone, it supports a 144Hz refresh rate.

With that being said, the Red Magic 5G is definitely an interesting device. It starts at €579 for the base model, a 100€ increase over last year, but the more expensive model is €649 - a much smaller €50 increase over the previous iteration. Here are our first impressions.
