    Hello,

I might be going on a trip soon for pleasure and was wanting to take my laptop but because I am probably going to use the hotel hotspot to connect to the Internet while I stay for the night, I just want to stick with a basic inbound protection only firewall which is Windows Firewall.

My question to everyone, will Windows Firewall help at all with trying to "hide" from hackers? I mean, I imagine its not as safe as other solutions but I don't really want problems with connecting to the Internet so thats why I need to ask that question for Windows Firewall.

Thanks, hope you all can share some knowledge on this :)

Having XP SP2 FW is better than having no FW protection at all, but having a seperate independent FW such as ZA, Sygate etc is probably better than having the XP FW. Also take note that the XP FW does not support outgoing protection but only incoming. Personally if its were my laptop I would install either the free edition of Sygate or Zone Alarm and see how you go. Also once done I would disable the XP FW completely, so i.e turn it off and let the 3rd party one do the job.

Here are the links to the free Sygate and ZA:

The Windows firewall should work fine, just enable "Don't allow exceptions" or disable any exceptions you may have configured that would not be appropriate when using hotspots.
