Presently I think its worth using it, as it has more easy to customize rules and it is very light. If you don't have other hips program, this is a very good one.

In the future we will see how Comodo develops and obviously the trend now is combo of firewall & hips in a single app, and while it seems normal, single hips apps developers are on the merge and they abandon their work.

Thats life and this is what every serious person about his work should do, looking for more opportunities, expand and gain.

Prosecurity was good in its day. Whether or not that day has passed is the question. HIPS do not go out of date as quickly as most other security apps. However, there ARE new types of threats every day, and a HIPS that has no one watching the store is a crapshoot IMO.

Prosecurity's developer ceased to "watch the store" several months ago. That is NOT a good situation for one seeking a state-of-the-art HIPS to protect against state-of-the-art malware.

I prefer to use a live & active HIPS. I especially prefer a HIPS that has a busy forum where users post comments concerning tests (POC etc) where the HIPS didn't come up to par, or issues/questions concerning configurations, and so forth.

Those kinds of forums keep the developer of the HIPS on his toes, and often result in vital/timely tweaks and updates and patches to the HIPS application.

The HIPS with forums that are dynamic and active are Online Armor, Comodo Personal Firewall (with "Defense+" HIPS), and (to a somewhat lesser extent) System Safety Monitor.

I might add that Threatfire also has a very active support forum. However, TF is a behavior blocker HIPS and not a full-scope classical HIPS such as ProSec (was), Comodo Defense+, Online Armor, & SystemSecurityMonitor.

    I agree.
Agree again. But until some esoteric new attack vector poses a serious threat, I plan on keeping my PS.
Heck, a lot of people are still using / happy with their ProcessGuard.
My theory is that people that use HIPs (or even know what HIPs are) are those that least need them.

Having paid for the Lifetime version I have to wonder why the developer stopped ?

is it still worth using? was it or any other hips program ever worth using ? or was it just another security fad going nowhere ?

If you actively go looking for trouble then I would accept that ProSecurity or several others would be worth using. If you are more normal then I would question the point of this type of program.

Edit "My theory is that people that use HIPs (or even know what HIPs are) are those that least need them." agreed

    Ouch.
Which prompts me to want to start another thread:
"Has your HIPs ever saved you from something horrible"

IMO, never pay for a lifetime version of ANY security program. Diamond is defunct, as are Winpooch, Neoava, ProSec, Coreforce, etc. The "lifetime" referred to by such offers is not the lifetime of the customer but is, instead, the lifetime of the company making the offer. When that company dies, so also does the "lifetime license" die.

As to the value of HIPS, they are simply THE best protection against zero-day & other threats that fall below the radar of blacklists. The full value of a person's security is never truly measured until it actually fails...
+++When an antivirus or antispyware fails, it is usually the fault of that security app's blacklist &/or heuristics.
+++When a HIPS fails, it is almost always the fault of the user, who carelessly ignored a warning.

Thing is, i really like how its turning out. But since the whole idea that its dead, and i dont exactly know if its going to have proper updates to it scares me. I've caught the Wilders Paranoia....i think you guys understand lol.

I don't want to drive this off-topic, but since she also posts to EQS, for pity sakes i wish they would finally create a full english version w/installer for that one too.

Now back on-topic, the positive is that at least ProSecurity is going to continue from what this reads, and again for pity's sakes, i hope ProSec is even much more improved then the last version that i finally after struggling for years with it, got it to stabalize with my units without BSOD's i used to experience.

So maybe theres some hope here yet.

The cost was very small and I liked the idea of lefitimate protection for 7 machines. As it turned out I stopped using any protection in jan 2007 so even if ProSec was still operating I would have "wasted" my money.

As to your final points we could argue this all day long. The thing I object to is the assumption and it is usually an assumption and nothing more that the security they use has somehow protected them. So just out of curiosity - in the last 5 years how many times have your programs saved you ? In the 12 years since I first went on line I have encountered nothing more dangerous than a few bad cookies. Have I just been lucky and am simply awaiting bthe fate that you predict or has protection got more to do with how we behave than how many programs that we use ? I can live with a hardware firewall and Firefox and nothing bad happens. If something bad did happen Shadow Protect could be called upon. If I wanted to surf off piste then the whole machine could be protected with Shadow defender. I just don't see a need, for me, for AV, AS or hips.

Naw, he ceased selling lifetime licenses after a short time, largely due to counsel offered to him by people here at Wilders. Fairly early, Jei began selling licensesc that remained in force for a major version (1,1.02, 1.43, etc.) but had to be renewed for major new versions (valid for 1.x but renew for 2.x; etc)

As to why Prosec failed -- IMO it failed because Jei has neither the skills nor interests in the marketing, tech support, hard work, & committment needed when running one's own software outfit.
