OpenVPN and Win 7

I have the official OpenVPN for Windows installed on Win 7, latest version 2.2.2(installer signed 22 december 2011, is it still developed?) When I click the OpenVPN GUI shortcut it starts normally, without an UAC prompt. Then I tell it to connect to my VPN and it succesfully reports it is connected + assigned IP and the icon in systray is green. However when I go to an IP check site it still shows my own IP adress :S If I manually right-click the shortcut to start as admin and connect, it does show the IP of the VPN provider. Does this mean the connection it totally unencrypted when starting it normally? Then why wouldn't they have it ask for admin rights by default?

 

I'm surprised that OpenVPN would fail so silently in Windows 7. But it clearly needs admin rights to successfully create the TAP adaptor. Maybe TAP failure doesn't trigger a popup error in the stock OpenVPN client.

I don't use VPNs on Windows. Maybe others who do will have more insight.

 

Yes it needs ADMIN rights, I don't think there is a work around.

Yes I noticed the same thing.. Once I set it to run with Administrator rights my IP changed.

I would say yes it is. If you go to http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/downloads.html there is 'OpenVPN 2.3_rc1 -- released on 2012.10.31'

 

Last Alpha of OpenVPN came up as a trojan... They need to fix their code.

I know now, but there are probably other user that still don't know and OpenVPN still reports everything is fine if you don't while it is clearly not fine.
