Online Test for Security

Hello:

Would anyone kindly recommend a safe , free, and realtively reliable online test for security issues.

In the past, I have used the Symantec Online Security Scan at:

Bu that one no longer runs.

I have also some unreliable results from Shields Up at grc.com in terms of ICMP Echo failures:

Are there other such online scans which are safe to use and might be more reliable?

if you have a router or even nat for that instance ICMP Echo will sometimes register as a fail because the MODEM or ROUTER responds not your computer. some routers don't respond and some do. Normally the ones I have seen that do respond to it are Modem/Router built into one as they are done with the min stats on everything.

As far as I have been able to tell GRC has always been a Reliable source to test ports.

If you want to test this put your Self in the DMZ Zone and put up your fav firewall see if it responds there Alot of firewalls are Defaulted to drop the Echo when it comes in.

GRC does show all the ports Stealthed. Youre probably correct about that ICMP test and Router/Modem configurations.

Would you mind explaining exactly how I "put MYSELF into the DMZ Zone and put up my Firewall"..I'm somewhat new to this terminology.

The DMZ in a networking sense is just a computer on your internal network that other computers outside your network can assess. It depends on your router. They might have a DMZ option where you can just place the interal IP of your computer. Otherwise you can get your router just to forward all ports to your computer (though the icmp packets wont be forwarded)

 

It could also be called Static IP in the modem. it will normally let you select your computer and its the same thing as DMZ but with a different name


I think all Actiontec and Westell Modems have the Option labeled as Static IP Or Enable Static IP (AKA DMZ)
the rest normally state it as DMZ.
