The NZ Institute of Directors has taken its website offline after it was defaced by a hacker - and it has warned its members to change their passwords in case they were compromised.

Ironically, the Institute - whose members sit on the boards of some of New Zealand's largest companies - has put a lot of energy recently into educating its members about cybersecurity risks, and how to prepare for them.
Patterson said it did not appear that the hacker, "Vanda the God" was targetting the IoD directly.

Instead, the Institute was hit in a global spray of attacks of global by the hacker, which also hit sites in the US, the UK and the Americas according to US media reports and a brag list on Vanda the God's Twitter account, which remains active.

The Institute has been told by one of its technology partners "that there is a small but highly unlikely chance a list of emails and potentially passwords may have been compromised," Patterson said.

Mulitple websites affiliated with the University of Florida student government association were hacked early Saturday.
Information on the sites was replaced with obscenities and a political message.

The twitter user claiming responsibility, @VandaTheGod, has hacked many other local government and university websites in multiple countries.
The sites were restored around 4p.m. Saturday.

Hackers vandalized two of the state of Minnesota’s webpages last week, say IT officials — the second incident of government website defacement in Minnesota in two weeks.

For a brief time on Aug. 5, messaging that officials have described as “anti-government” covered a Minnesota Department of Human Services refugee services page and administrative portal, according to reports. Minnesota’s Security Operations Center quickly pulled them down and as of Friday was still investigating the incident.
The digital vandals infiltrate webpages, scrawl their names across them, and upload screenshots to online message boards, vying to get on the most impressive sites.

The incident comes after a similar attack on a Minnesota county website the week before.
On July 30, the homepage of Stearns County, a part of the larger Minneapolis metro area, displayed a photo of an individual with a Guy Fawkes mask and a sign advertising crudely for “the revolution,” according to local news outlets.

Cyber attack hits medical centres

A global cyber security attack has forced the websites of four Wairarapa medical practices to be taken down after a Tu Ora Compass Health server fell victim to a hacker.
Tu Ora Compass Health’s website and the websites of Kuripuni, Greytown, Featherston, and Carterton medical centres cannot be accessed.

The affected websites were defaced on August 5 as part of a series of attacks across the world by a hacker group calling themselves ‘Vanda the God’.
The attack also hit sites in the United States, Great Britain and South America, according to a brag list on Vanda the God’s Twitter account.

PHO hack: More data breaches found involving up to a million patients
A primary health organisation whose website was hacked in August has found evidence of earlier attacks dating back to 2016

Tū Ora holds data on patients dating back to 2002, from the greater Wellington, Wairarapa and Manawatu regions so nearly a million people in the lower North Island could be affected.

"We are devastated that we weren't able to keep people's information safe. While this was illegal and the work of cyber criminals, it was our responsibility to keep people's data safe and we've failed to do that," Mr Hefford said.
The August hack was part of a global cyber incident.
It's not yet known whether any patient information was accessed and Tū Ora said it is likely that will never be known.

The Ministry of Health said it has been working closely with Tū Ora Compass Health since the PHO became aware of the hack in early August.

Hacker Claims to Have Medical Details of More Than 1 Million New Zealanders

A hacker working under the name Vanda The God claims to have breached the database of Tū Ora Compass Health and has offered the medical details of 1 million New Zealanders for sale on Twitter, according to the Canterbury, New Zealand Star-News.

Vanda the God has been linked to a number of other hacks, including the hack of the Randolph County, North Carolina government website, the home page of the city of Tyler, Texas and the New Zealand website for the Institute of Directors. Vanda the God keeps a running list of their previous hacks, linked to from their Twitter account.

Patients in the lower North Island are being reassured there is no evidence that any of their personal or health information has been illegally accessed.

The hacking concerned the public website of a primary health organisation known as Tū Ora Compass, covering Wellington, Kapiti and Wairarapa.
But he stressed that while the group's website has been hacked, there is no sign at all that such data has been obtained.

"The only reassurance we can give is that currently there is no evidence that any data has actually been accessed illegally. Our public website has been hacked but there's no actual evidence that anyone's data has been exposed."
The Mental Health Foundation chief executive, Shaun Robinson, said what happened is a wake-up call for any organisation holding vital personal records. He said: "Sadly, it's a situation where malicious hackers or potentially criminal cyber activity you know, continues to up the ante and those protecting data have to continue to increase their vigilance as well."
