I just installed Norton - the suite provided by Xfinity. Per CrystalDisk, which reports various hard drive measurements, yesterday my system wrote over 30gb. The +30 GB was after Norton was installed. The norm for my system is ~7gb per day. Today, with my system on for less than an hour, and with nothing unordinary running, it has already written 6gb.

In Norton, Optimize is turned off as well as other performance features and I turned off automatic scans. I do not know why it would have such high disk usage in the gigabytes even with those features but with them off, it makes no sense why it needs so much disk activity. I will keep monitoring it, then decide whether to get rid of Norton as

Anyone notice unusually high disk writes/activity from Norton? Anyone know if there are features to check that if on or off would affect disk usage by it?

I've seen claims in the past that turning off the disk optimization doesn't actually do so. I would start by researching that further.

Thanks. Do you, or anyone, know if, in Windows 10, there is a log or anything that shows when disk optimizes has been started and by what process or anything like that?

You'd probably want to use some kind of process monitoring tool as I don't think these things get logged. Unless Norton itself is logging it.

    - Run Antibody's WIZTREE. It's able to show the size of the folder "C:\system volume information". In that folder Windows stores the info for the System Restore Points. If that folder grows every day then it's a sign that some program/process (Norton ??) is fiddling with Window's system info/files. And that includes installing programs (e.g. Norton). Perhaps your browser (Chrome ??) is automatically updating itself every day ?

Maybe but I check CrystalDisk every few weeks and I have never noticed any spikes in writes before. Based on the graphs in CrystalDisk, sometimes my system would go a few days with just 1-2gb of writes then have a 10-12gb spike but I do not recall ever seeing a 30gb day. Also, I have Chrome's cache done on my D drive and I just checked the Chroem cache on the D drive to make sure it was still working, finding it has files in the cache dated yesterday and today.

Perhaps a decent AV would be a simpler option ?

You've got to disable both Disk Optimization in Task Scheduling and Idle Time Optimizer in Administrative Settings.
