:doubt: Flawless Heuristics (there will NEVER be such a thing) would have detected this :)

Being secretive is nothing new in the software industry. IMHO - ESET should have kept their mouths shut until they had something to give to the public ie. some sort of press release. (not on someones private blog)

Good for an experienced user or Dare-Devil :ninja: Absolutley USELESS for the novice since there is too many false detections and seriously counter productive in the case of a network of inexperienced users. Imagine a group of users sending email to support 'Uh, it's ok to allow xyz.exe to run at startup?'. You see the point I am getting at?

About KAV 6:- It has it's plusses ie.

    -Excellent erradication of threats
    -Really effective selfprotection
    -Super fast incremental updates
-Proactive Defense Module works well (although rollback feature needs work)

Agreed - And this is not just common for the security industry. Look at the automotive industry when designing a new model, or even a simple 'Vanilla Slice' bake-off at a country fair. ESET have learnt from past experience on this issue and it is good to see, I am glad that they are extra-tight lipped about his and am awaiting patiently for the time that they are ready to release official news, until then there is too much potential for it to be harmful. I'd just rather wait until ESET is ready to share.

Golly it's late - my paragraphs are getting longer. More words - less description.

    Cheers :)

To address a portion of your reply:
It is not uncommon for companies, especially the hardware sector (at CES, E3, etc) and some software companies, to display proof-of-concept packages at trade shows even if actual release is a while off.

I have no problems with what ESET has done in regards to CeBIT. It was important for them to show off what work they had done to investors and the tech community even though it was not ready for release in beta format. Such displays energize investors and encourage more cashflow, while providing the ability to comment on the positive/negative visual aspects.

I have spent a lot of time testing different antivirus softwares that are in beta format, as I beta tested NOD32 2.5. There's been a major difference, as the NOD32 beta I tested didn't cause anywhere near the issues as other companies' software. Such an experience (i.e. late-cycle beta release) turns off far fewer people than early-cycle, near-alpha releases that wreak havoc on peoples' systems.

The tech culture has changed to where the community expects to be involved in almost all aspects of the product dev cycle. I applaud Eset for not caving in to community pressure and waiting to release products until they feel it is viable to do so. We know precisely what we need to know at this point.

There are plenty of jobs and plenty of other betas out for people who require the cathartic experience of downloading buggy software that crashes computers and thrashes hard drives.

the prob with statistics is the way they are used! the links to the ones at Eset prove Kav is crap(not true)Ones elswhere probably prove nod is crap(also not true)
Try this if 70%(not sure of actual figure)of people who die of lung cancer smoke does this prove smoking is the cause(we know it is!)
But if nobody smoked 100% of people that would die would be non-smokers,so from these figures is smoking safer than non-smoking?
There are lies ,damn lies and statistics!

Sorry, I'm not getting what you wanted to say. These Perfloggers uploaded to Jotti's are installers and NOD32 actually detects them during installation !!!

Also take into account that Jotti's doesn't always show correct results and lots of uploaded files are just crappy non-functional files or installers.

I have noticed this trend as well. Personally, I would prefer a good heuristic engine with low footprint over one with poor heuristic protection and a slightly larger database. Nod32 detected Sober and Mydoom the instant they spawned, can you say the same about many other engines?

Here's a few of the other zero-day smackdowns: http://www.nod32-av.com/heuristics/threatsense.htm#W . This isn't meant to bash anyone's opinion by any means, we're just comparing preferences.

They're both excellent choices, we're not comparing poopscanner here. :)

I can show more examples - my point was to counter the screenshot from VirusTotal that showed NOD32 as the only AV to catch a new virus strain. I can show you literally dozens of trojans (not harmless!!!) that NOD32 DOESN'T detect. Trojan detection has been a concern for NOD32 for the past few years here, just search past posts and see. Most experts recommended that a separate trojan scanner be purchased - even Paul Wilders used/uses a dedicated AT.

NOD32 is an excellent AV, one of the very best. I have recommended it to many friends and clients. It seems to have less problems than most and is simple to install and uninstall. It's self-protection is excellent as well.

No I'm just sayiing that you aren't full of crap and still comparing other AV's to your likings, and at the same time making comments on the individual strongpoints each AV has. It's more than most fanboys do around here...

I salute you actually.. Yes I do.

I've just realised the term trolling refers to a fishing technique:-dragging a baited hook!! (I wondered where from/why this term had been adopted)

Don't want to argue with you but don't you think the very first post in this thread was a "trolling type" post? maybe not aimed at nod users but I feel the thread starter would know that it would be read by non-nod users, and was deliberately posted to "get a reaction" from them!

My reaction was misinterpreted and was not meant to cause offence. I posted what I did because I would genuinely like to have seen an answer to your question and felt that it could be a topic all its own and that was the best place to have it answered.
