Most Linux users looking for a genuinely fast and stable system will eventually end up with something Gentoo based. Recently the already meager offerings have diminished even further with the demise of probably the best known example, Sabayon. Whilst nothing official has been announced to my knowledge there is now an alpha status offering called MocaccinoOS which includes their own ISO’s and advice on how to migrate from Sabayon. The whole setup looks highly unstable at the moment but this is only to be expected in the early days of any new project. I truly hope it succeeds since Sabayon was always the best way to get Gentoo in a format accessible to non nerds.

Apart from that Calculate is still going strong and now takes over as top dog in my mind pending the development of Mocaccino. There’s also Redcore but since the one-man developer only appears in fits and starts this is not something I would recommend for long term use.

Sabayon is dead … Long live the King!
