My old PC died. It was running XP Home. I managed to clone the old hard drive to a USB2 drive by slaving it into another PC and running True Image 9. I bought a new PC with Windows XP Pro. I would like to move all of the apps and data from the USB drive to the new hard drive, but reading the FAQ for Migrate Easy I come to the section about using the Microsoft System Preparation Tool (under "How can I prepare my Windows XP ... for cloning to different hardware" and that has me stumped.

Can anyone point me to step -by- step directions or provide me with a cookbook directions to move from the USB drive to the new harddrive? I don't have the old drive to use so it will have to come off the USB drive. I also dont' care if I end up with Xp Pro or the old XP home.

    TIA

    Hello johnma,

Thank you for choosing Acronis System Transferring Software.

Please be aware that you should use the Microsoft System Preparation Tool (sysprep) on your old system before the cloning. In case you do not have your old hard drive you cannot prepare it now.

I can recommend you to connect your USB drive to the PC having disconnected all other drives from it. Then boot the operating system from this drive and prepare it using the Microsoft System Preparation Tool.

After that please create Acronis Bootable Rescue CD, connect your new internal hard drive to the computer and boot from this CD. Then you will be able to clone the external USB drive to this hard drive.

    Thank you.
