Does anyone know if the different messenger programs(windows live messenger, yahoo messenger, aim etc...) encrypt video chat. I know Skype does. Since Skype encrypts I assume your ISP or others cannot look at the video right? Encrypting the video chat is the only way to prevent others from looking at the video correct?

depends which protocol is set and used and the strength of the encryption cypher. also some multi-messenger software (pidgin/trillian) may connect to those account but do not facilitate encryption.

the Skype protocol is claimed as propitiatory and it remains a bit of a mystery whether the encryption has been cracked or not, or even if there is a way to link into it for some agencies. particularly after Skype was recently sold to an investor. there is however a way to record video/audio on your machine if someone had access to it and installed a certain piece of software

I meant outside of my computer. ISP, them sniffer programs. Not sure if the sniffer programs can capture video though, never have messed with them.

ISP would probably not use a packet sniffer but deep packet inspection (DPI), which can process 20 - 30 Gb/s of network traffic in realtime

Which essentially is the same thing, isn't it?

Skype is not to be trusted. I assume they have a backdoor and I assume they had no choice but to implement one if they wanted to continue doing business. You are better of doing the same. Guilty until proven innocent? Well, your call if you want to risk the possibility.

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_VoIP_software
You should find some that can do both video chat and use strong crypto.

Would Pidgin OTR work with video too?

Those that don't rely on proprietary crypto and network, i.e. most of them.

I wish there was some software you could get for your messenger program instead of getting a whole different messenger program. The only thing I am finding are programs to encrypt the text, no voice or video. I suppose if you used a VPN service and setup the proxy/socks in your messenger that would do it.

for your initial ISP yes, if that the goal. in the end any VPN service provider becomes an ISP too, question of trust vs. paranoia
