Media Player Classic vs K-Lite Codec Pack

I am confused....why would one install the K-Kite Codec Pack which includes MPC + Codecs when simply installing MPC-Home Cinema plays everything out of the box without the need for any codecs??

Someone please clarify which is better and why?

Additionally, how does the K-Lite codec Pack 64-Bit perform? Is it better for me to install since I am running 64 Bit Windows? Can the 64-bit version of K-Lite also player Real Media, and Quick Time files? Or shall I download the Real Alternative and Quick Time Alternatives Separately?

And please don't suggest VLC because after the update to v2 it became crap...when I fast forward to a diff. part of a movie, the video gets distorted for a while

 

The codec pack will make you play files with other players too like windows media player and in programs like movie maker for example. Also the codec pack supports more file formats than the player alone for example rm rmvb.

So Ill install the Sharky Codecs and the x64 components too even though I don't use WMP or Media Centre

I am against using any program that comes from Microsoft except for Windows

rm, rmvb (RealMedia) is pretty dead. What's the last time when you watched a video in Real Media format ?
Codec Packs are evil, just install manually Media Player Classic, FFDSHOW, AC3, and DirectVobSub or try PotPlayer 64-bit version.

 

Some people need more than that.
And codec packs are by no means evil.

Nothing, but when it's already bundled inside K-lite and when I don't mind some of extra playback/configuration stuff, why not?
You'd also need to manually configure your player to use stuff you installed additionally, which is :effort: in my book.
But, everyone has their preferences.

 

You're right about RMVB I don't recall the last time I used a file that is RM/RMVB

Used to be a huge fan of KMPlayer as it played everything at high quality and was very smooth!

But one member here on the forums told us that it has a Dialer to Home thing and others confirmed it too so I had to ditch it

VLC is crap after updating to v2 when I enable hardware acceleration, if I fast forward between diff. parts of the movie the video becomes distorted seriously bad. I have a GeForce 460 M with the latest nVIDIA drivers so Im pretty sure it's not my video card, plus, other players dont have this issue

KMPlayer is not PotPlayer. PotPlayer is developed by the same guy but for a different company (DAUM). What you may heard about a trojan in KMPlayer may be true or false - I don't know and I don't use KMPlayer.

The only thing I know about a possible issue with the PotPlayer built-in updater; if you use it PotPlayer will revert to Korean language, that's all.

Note that beta version are only 32bit, 64bit is only stable version

 

I have used the K-Lite Standard package and the bundled MPC-HC for years, and I am very much satisfied with them.

But nothing is perfect. The package is updated too frequently, and there isn´t an auto updater, AFAIK. Also, the complete names of the files opened are stored in the Registry, which can cause privacy problems (I don´t know if this is still true in the latest versions).

 

I'm guessing you never tried CCCP then? Been using it for seven years without any problems and it stays out of the way of my video editing software. It comes with the Media Player Classic Home Cinema, ffdshow and the needed essentials without the BS. I think the only down fall is it does not update as often where others do.

 

Well, I use only MPC for years (MPCx64 now), no codecs at all and all formats play just fine, ditched K-Lite long time ago.

 

I didn't realize the MPC player now has magical qualities. Guess I'll have to give it another look-see. I'm big on software from the otherworld.

 

I use MPC (not home cinema) with ffdshow (32-bit) and haali matroska splitter on Win7 x64. Using Win7DSFilterTweaker set 32-bit H.264 to ffdshow and leave the rest or change accordingly.
This has worked well for me since i first ran Win7 for over a year and a half. With this setup i can work with .mkv + other containers/formats flawlessly and use my favourite TMpgEnc applications, authoring works for dvds and video mastering works for other content.
