Thanks for the reply. Do you have any plans to improve this? I would like to deny access to certain folders but the slowdown is just too much. I have had to return to EQS which does not show any slowdown at all. Otherwise, I like MD and will return to it when performance improves.

If anyone knows of a discount code or coupon for Malware Defender, please let me know by PM. I consider $40 is too expensive for a new & unknown HIPS, even if it is purportedly "one-off."

Otherwise, I reluctantly must consider better-known HIPS such as SSM or OnlineArmor. The reason is because, in the past I purchased licenses for 3 other security programs that were "one-off" but they subsequently went out of business, leaving me with useless licenses.

    Any information is greatly appreciated.

    aloha... bellgamin

Yes, understandable, it could happend anytime, but one should also take in consideration the fact that they also own the acclaimed Registry Workshop (best advanced registry editor), developped from 2004. Not a warranty of the future of the company but at least a good history track. Note that for now I prefer using SSM, and I think that if SSm adds files protection, it will stay as the leader HIPS for another while, imho.

I am running a trial copy of MD and like it a lot.

However, I have noticed another issue. Namely, MD's GUI has NO built-means for checking for updates. Neither could I find any provision on MD's website whereby paying customers can sign-up for notification when updates are available -- no newsletter or anything like that.

Perhaps I overlooked something whereby MD keeps its paid users informed of updates. If not, I strongly recommend that Xiaolin clarify or fix this situation as soon as possible.

I couldn't find that fact on their website. How do you know that they send emails? Are you already registered? Have they actually sent you emails?

P.S. I am not disputing what you said. My questions are honest requests for further information so I can decide whether or not to buy a license.

    Yes and yes.

They do send notification of updates via email. If I remember correctly, there was an option somewhere in the buying process about accepting/requesting this emailing. But I would also like an updating automated/manual option in the GUI.

i think what missing from all this HIPS software is a way it will scan your c:\ drive and appl folder and make it all tusted like RTD half doing .

in this method a "learn" for couple of days (which is actuley run your installed software and add it to "trust" list) can make pc infected and than u "sealed" it with MD "normal mode" ....

i just want to know what xiaolin think on my way of view this?

    cheers

It will create many unnecessary app rules if scaning c:\ and app folder.

If an application do not require special permissions, you need not to create app rule for it in MD, adding a child app rule in explorer.exe will be enough.

AVG detects this site as a trojan downloader

Has to be AVG typical FP i would think.

More OT: Malware Defender seems to be working & protecting fine, however it's a juggling act for me to fit all these different HIPS i use (3), configs & settings into an orderly pattern i finally understand.

That is an AVG problem and (IMO) should be posted in a thread about AVG, NOT a thread about Malware Defender.

N.P. -- it's just that you *might* get more input from fellow users of AVG, concerning FPs, if you post your issue in a thread about AVG. Not all AVG fans use Malware Defender. And vice versa.

Aloha and good wishes... Bill Bellgamin

Seems to me it's nearing time for a new update to Malware Defender HIPS. Anyone using it, can you offer some Pros & Cons about what you think is missing (if any) or have any satisfactory results you would like to share with the community?

    Thanks

I gave a go to the trial. Interface is excellent, network filtering is (or was then) definitely missing but some features like for example when firefox (default browser) is open and another program launches default browser (with parameters) it doesn't stop it/asks for permission to launch it. If the default browser is not opened it asks whether I should allow this specific program to launch firefox or not, otherwise no. I would like to add more points but I used it for very short time.

As for resources, in a modern computer, its almost unnoticeable like RTD. Good work generally.

After a future major update I will try MD again.

Not to be outdone by the other HIPS even if they are free, Malware Defender is an absolutely welcome development and it ranks IMO at the top of the tier in HIPS that are extremely reliable, user friendly, and "lite" + "stable".

This one is not to be taken for granted or lightly at all. :thumb:
