I read that LooknStop does not have Application Monitoring--is that true?

 

The free version (Look N' Stop Lite) doesn't but the paid version does indeed...

 

How would you compare LooknStop with Outpost Pro?

 

Havent tried Outpost since the old free version. Look n Stop has pretty much always been my firewall. Its very light yet amazingly secure with a good set of enhanced rules ready to be loaded at setup. It scores exceptionally well in firewall tests. see here: http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.htm. Another nice feature is the unlimited license, no annual fee...

What are you using for anti-virus and anti-spyware?

 

We need to stay on topic with Look n Stop or we will be chastened by one of the moderators for straying off course. But briefly, I run DrWEB for antivirus and Online Armor and A squared to combat malware and spyware. DrWEB also looks for spyware as it is included in their database...

 

Just a note: Both Outpost and LnS pass all of the leaktests listed at firewallleaktester.com(even though the website suggests otherwise).

Outpost has more features and available plug-ins, while LnS is lighter. One of the plug-ins that comes with Outpost is Anti-Spyware(which is a version of Ad-Aware from Lavasoft) that has active monitoring and privacy controls. The difference in system usage for these firewalls is great.

 

Considering I would need something for spyware with LnS, the usage difference may not be so great. However, I feel that separate components appeal to me more than one component doing the work of 2 or 3 separate utilities, even though having an all-in-one is likely more convenient. Perhaps my thinking goes back to the audiophile days when separate components delivered better performance . . .

 

Remember Anti-Spyware in Outpost can be easilly removed since it is a plug-in. I think LnS is somewhere around 5-9 MB mem. usage where Outpost is somewhere around 30-40 MB mem usage(These numbers are very rough estimates, but should give idea of the difference)

 

Is that 30-40 with or without the anti-spyware? I'm assuming the anti-spyware adds some usage.

I went to the LooknStop website and information is kind of scarce. I love the part where it states what to do if you can't connect to the Internet and there's no phone support

Some ISP (Internet Service Providers) use fragmented data packets to open and keep the connection.

Those packets must be authorized by Look 'n' Stop.

To authorize them , import these internet filtering rules:
club_internet_adsl.rie

(I should also save that file )

Put these rules on top of the list and clic on Apply and Save buttons

Some type of Installation Guide that could be downloaded would be helpful.

 

You can search the forums for actual mem. usage, or wait for someone runing them to specify. I am currently running neither and can only give rough estimates.

 

LnS is running at 3500K for me right now. Thats about average here...

I looked at the OA website and don't see anything that indicates OA does a scan. Does an installed OA scan your computer?

I am presently using SpySweeper and that program really slows down the opening of my home page, and it also slows down the opening of links. How is OA in those situations?

 

Started using this version today after looking for a good software firewall. Im pretty impressed with look'n'stop so far :]

Am i misunderstanding something about no application monitoring in the free version - Or am i mixing it up with application filtering ?

 

No application filtering in the free version (so inbound filter only) and the GUI will start maximized instead of starting in the tray
