Linux Mint with MATE works really really great

Hope: a review of MATE, a fork of Gnome 2 desktop environment offered as replacement for Gnome 3 and tested on Linux Mint 12 Lisa. This might actually save your bacon, your bread and your desktop.

Great review as usual and I liked very much your conclusion. However, be very careful when expressing your opinion about LinuxMint because there are some out there that do not like when something works out of the box. These people, obviously, would swear under oath that Gentoo is the best (practical and user friendly) distro, even for a Linux beginner. .

I enjoyed your article Mrkvonic! It's nice to see MATE picking up the pieces GNOME 3 left (which, by the way, I loved GNOME 2, and dislike with a passion GNOME 3).

One question I have is this: "It won't be easy, as Ubuntu leads and Mint must follow, and thus Gnome 3 will always be there."

That's a direct quote, I am wondering, are you saying this because Ubuntu is more popular than Mint or because Mint is based off of Ubuntu?

 

Gnome 3, an utter abomination, has come close to driving me away permanently from Linux, but MATE could keep me interested. BTW, nice review Mrk

 

Mint is in transition and this version seems to be a rush job, it's a mess.....bleeeeeee

I have to agree... I got a kernel panic from just unplugging my usb drive. Seems a bit rough around the edges.....

The download is 922 megabytes in size. I've downloaded and burned to disc the iso but haven't tried it just yet. Probably will later today...in between a few eggnogs and brandy....

Don't waste your time (and bandwidth) on this one. They just slapped the MATE packages in with the Unity packages. You actually boot up to the Unity desktop during the live session. It appears you must install to hard drive then on the reboot choose MATE at the login screen. But that would leave you with the tedious chore of deleting all of the Unity stuff.

Like I said, just pass on this one. But if you're the adventurous type then of course go for it.

Thanks for review, I installed LM 12 tonight and MATE is working for me.
I miss a few choice applets like system monitor, weather and tomboy but it is nice to be up to date and still stay in the sweet spot of pseudo gnome 2. I didn't touch LM 12 because of all the bad reviews I read during its release. Mrk, we rely on you far more than you know!

 

Thanks for all the links and reviews on your site. I use Linux on and off and am not up to speed, I had no idea Gnome 3 was such a disaster! In fact after seeing how Windows 8 will be pushing the dummified Metro UI down our throats, I was hoping Linux (the OS for power users, right?) would be there to save the day

 

To go off topic, you can still use the classic 95 looks in Windows 8. Microsoft actually understands backward compatibility. You want metro, fine, you want aero, fine, you want classic, fine. You get all three. That's a big difference.

Apparently the answer is NO!

I went to the Mint 12 forum and apparently a Wallpaper Changer does not exist for Mint 12 yet

I'll stick with Ubuntu.....
