    http://news.techeye.net/software/linus-torvalds-busts-microsoft-patent

It looked like Microsoft was vindicated when ITC Administrative Law Judge Theodore R. Essex found that Motorola had violated four Microsoft patents. But Torvalds helped convince the Administrative Law Judge that the patent was invalid.

Microsoft says that Motorola patent violated one of its own, known as the 352 patent. This dealt with the storing filenames with lots of characters in old filesystems such as the Windows FAT. Mobile phone makers use this type of technology so that their devices interoperate with other operating systems, including Windows.

Torvalds said that Motorola had found the posting of his about long filenames used in a compatible manner with short file names - and that it predated the Microsoft patent by three years.

USA still the best. But barely.
Yes F Apple, M$ & Google. In that exact order. LOL

I'm positive in my book Apple ranks #1 in the F them race.

But I waffle back & forth about who's #2. :gack:

I agree with you fully about Apple being totally rotten to the core. As for MS, sometimes its understandably professional and sometimes just plain childish. Also why would they bother for something that apparently has less than 1% market share ;)

The one you posted is commonly known as the monkey dance and at the end he makes it clear he "loves this company" or words to that effect. Maybe you meant to post something else because the present one doesn't fit the context o_O

I wonder what's going on with the Barnes and Noble matter.

And shouldn't the title be Linus busts MS patent?

And, re. "Yes F Apple, M$ & Google.", I don't think Google is in the suing business.

I would assume they hate Google for other reasons as patent trolling really isn't their thing.

This link is on the same subject but has more detail and includes mention that the entire matter is still up in the air.

    The context is patent trolling.

Patent trolling is aquiring patents for the sole purpose of making money off them. Defending patents that are used in products is not patent trolling as in the specific example given in the first post.
IMHO this still sucks, because software patents suck in general.

The older I get, the more I think software patents suck. I am glad I live in a country where software is almost impossible to patent software.

    Cheers, Nick

"In this environment, brandishing invalid patents can be a good business strategy. This behavior, called “patent trolling,” gets a lot of attention ..." o_O

That definition of patent trolling is different from the one I know, which is defines patent trolling as acquiring patents without actually using those patents in any products with the sole purpose of making money from others infringing on those patents.

Yeah, I actually think of it more as what you're referring to Nick. I used it more for lack of a better phrase.
