What is Krita?
This is our vision for the development of Krita:

Krita is a free and open source cross-platform application that offers an end-to-end solution for creating digital art files from scratch. Krita is optimized for frequent, prolonged and focused use. Explicitly supported fields of painting are illustrations, concept art, matte painting, textures, comics and animations. Developed together with users, Krita is an application that supports their actual needs and workflow. Krita supports open standards and interoperates with other applications.

Krita is a free and open-source graphics editor for desktop platforms, and while it was originally developed as a competitor to GIMP, it was later retooled into a digital painting program. An Android port has been in the works for a while, and it's now available on the Play Store as an Early Access build.

The app works very well on my Galaxy Tab S6, complete with pressure sensitivity support for the S-Pen.
The new Android port is also great news for Chromebooks — while the Linux version was already available, stylus pressure sensitivity does not work on Linux applications on Chrome OS.

You can download Krita from the Play Store at the link below. It's only officially available for tablets and Chromebooks, but if you really want to use it on a phone, grab the APK from APKMirror.

Krita: First Krita Beta for Android and ChromeOS in Play Store

Open source graphics editor, Krita, now available in the Play Store

The Play Store version of the software is still the full desktop version of Krita so it doesn’t include a touch interface; it may, therefore, not be so great on a small Android phone, but should be quite decent on a larger tablet of Chrome OS device.

The Play Store version is based on the latest Krita 4.2.9 which launched in March. The project said that unlike the Windows and Steam store editions, it isn’t asking for money for the Play Store edition as it’s the only way people can install Krita on Android devices.

Wrap-up: Possibilities
While perfect on desktops, Krita definitely has a lot of rough edges for its first official venture into Android tablets. Its user interface is obviously not designed for touch-first devices like tablets and sacrifices usability to bring all the power and features of its desktop version to Android and Chrome OS. At the same time, however, the performance it was able to deliver right on its first beta is, without any doubt, an impressive achievement.

Krita v4.3.0 Released (June 18, 2020)

Three months after the release of Krita 4.2.9, we’ve got a major new feature release for you: Krita 4.3.0! We’ve spent the past year not just fixing bugs, even though we fixed over a thousand issues, but have also been busy adding cool new stuff to play with.

Sharaf Zaman has worked on porting Krita to Android, and the first beta (based on Krita 4.2.9) has entered the Google Play Store for Chrome OS and Android tablets. Krita 4.3.0 will be there as the second beta: until we’re happy with the state of Krita on Android it will remain in the beta channel.

Krita v4.4.0 Released (October 13, 2020)

Only a little later than we had planned, this is the next feature release of Krita! With a whole slew of new fill layer types, including the really versatile SeExpr based scriptable fill layer type, exciting new options for Krita’s brushes like the gradient map mode for brushes, lightness and gradient modes for brush textures, support for dynamic use of colors in gradients, webm export for animations, new scripting features — and of course, hundreds of bug fixes that make this version of Krita better than ever. Especially exciting are all the fixes we made for Krita on ChromeOS and Android!

Krita 4.4.3 Released (March 24, 2021)

Today, we’re releasing Krita 4.4.3. This is strictly a bugfix release. We spend two beta’s worth of testing trying to make this a really stable release, because from now on, we’re focusing on Krita 5!

This will also be the last Krita release for 32 bits Windows; further releases will be 64 bits only.

This is the first release of Krita with a universal binary for macOS: the DMG contains both an ARM and a X64 build. Note that the main problem with Krita on macOS, OpenGL frame redraws interrupting the input queue is still a problem on both processor architectures.

Krita 5.0 Enters Public Beta Testing with All-New Resource System, Many New Features

Development on Krita 5.0 kicked off a few months ago, and, as a major release, it promises numerous new features and improvements. The biggest change being an all-new resource system that has been in development for a few years now.

With the new resource system in place, Krita 5.0 will no longer load all brushes, gradients, patterns, etc. during start-up. Instead, it will cache all these information during the first run, which means that the app will be a bit faster when starting up, yet the first run will be slower as all the info needs to be cached.
Among other new features, Krita 5.0 promises an all-new MyPaint brush engine, a revamped animation timeline docker, a completely rewritten color smudge brush engine, a new painting recorder, a new two-point perspective assistant, along with a limit area feature for assistants, as well as a new story-boarding feature.

Be aware though that this is a pre-release version, which means that some of the features are incomplete or missing. Also, when testing this beta release, keep in mind of the known issues listed on the release announcement page, and don’t use it for any production work!

Krita 5.0 Arrives Just in Time for Christmas, New Beta Is Out Now for Public Testing

The third beta of Krita 5.0 is here with lots of improvements and bug fixes to make the final release more stable and reliable. For example, it improves the alpha-mask PNG brush tips, adds support for loading the thumbnails for MYB mypaint brushes in a bundle, and fixes performance issues in the Magnetic Selection tool and textured brushes.

Today we’re releasing the third beta for Krita 5. There are a lot of fixes compared to beta 2. We’re aiming to release Krita 5 before Christmas, and are beginning to feel a bit confident about that.
Of course, the nightly stable builds already have a number of fixes compared to this beta release…

We will continue fixing issues that come in from testing the beta and the nightly builds so we can release a solid Krita 5.

Krita 5.0 Released (December 23, 2021)

Krita 5.0 is here!
This is a huge release, with a lot of new features and improvements. Some highlights:

• The way Krita handles things like brushes, gradients and palettes, as well as tagging, has been completely revamped. The new system is much faster, uses much less memory and is much more dependable!
• Gradients have been improved: they are much more smoothed and can handle wider gamuts.
• The smudge brush engine has been completely rewritten, and we’ve got a new brush engine, based on MyPaint
• The Animation system has been overhauled, with both user interface improvements and new features, such as clone frames and animated transform masks
• Krita now has a built-in storyboard editor!
• There’s a recorder to create a video out of your painting sessions

Highlights

Even more operations can handle multiple selected layers.

We’ve improved support for the WebP, Photoshop layered TIFF and Photoshop files, and there’s new support for the JPEG-XL file format.

We’re now using XSIMD instead of VC, improving painting performance, especially on Android where vectorization now is used for the first time.

The fill tools have been extended with continuous fill and a new Enclose and fill tool.

For Windows, we’re using a newer version of Angle to improve compatibility with video drivers and improve performance.

You can now configure touch controls in canvas input settings, like “Tap to Undo”.

And there are, of course, a lot of bug fixes, performance improvements and all kinds of little user interface polishing.
