We had several of our Windows 2008 (both standard and R2) servers lock up completely this morning after a Windows update (KB2585542) was installed. We actually had to move servers into safe mode to get them back up.

After figuring out which servers were ok and which servers failed, we discovered NOD ver 4.2.58.3 was on each failed server. Not sure why those servers were not on more current versions, but those that had 4.2.64.12 or 4.2.71.2 worked just fine.

After updating Nod, failed update installed without issue.
Hopefully this saves some troubleshooting for someone.

Microsoft PC Safety @ 1-866-727-2338 is also an option.
