Here is a question from the Candlepower forum.
Quote I do not have an AV on my system at this time. After reading this thread, I think I'll try Kaspersky. Which version should a computer dummy use. User friendly is a must as I'm not much on programing.
    Kaspersky Personal Security Suite 1.0 $50Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5.0 $40? End Quote

I have a distinct impression that most here do not like the Suite packages, and prefer seperate programs. Is this the case with KAV? I'll give this thread to them to make a decision. I do not have any suite, and do not know enough to answer intelligently.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

Well Kaspersky Internet Security 2006 will certanly be worth trying.
Lean and mean security suite that works more as one program than a huge fat suite. If you (will) own Kaspersky Suite 1.x you'll be able to switch to KIS2006 for free.

Otherwise i'd go with KAV5 Pro. Has some more features than regular KAV5.
But for KAV2006 that won't mater much since KAV and KAV Pro editions will be just one program (less confusion hehe).

For 2006 line you can try very early beta versions and there are also trials for all other Kaspersky programs. So you'r free to try and see which works best for you visually and performance wise.

The latest Kaspersky suite is in beta testing and the firewall and Av have been improved apparently. I would prefer a suite actually but most have at least one really weak module. Such as antispam for example. I will be giving reviews a close examination when KIS 2006 is finally released.

    Hi

I am running KAV 5 Personal Pro and Outpost 3.0.
I am also testing KIS beta on a test machine.
But I think I won't dump Outpost and replace it for KIS. By the way, it seems that KL is thinking about integrating Snort rules into KIS. Let's see what will be Agnitum response to this move if it really happens.
    Regards

    The reply it's simple:

If you want to use a single program to protect your system, than use KIS that would be the best overall protection program...

If you want to use separate programs for each layer of protection, use KAV...

Both seems to be excellent ;)

I note, however that almost none here like suites and prefer to use separate programs and configure them. I do not understand much about that as things must work out of the box without a lot of modification.

I read things like BD, for instance, is a good AV , but the firewall stinks, and the program is bloated. (Just and example and I do not know if I have read that about BD specifically.) So the question might be does KIS have a firewall and AS that are about as good as Outpost, and Counterspy for example, or would Outpost, Counterspy, and KAV be a better solution. I guess that at this point in time KIS has not been used enough to know the answer.

Assuming that KIS does as well as separate programs it would be a better solution for someone who needs a complete combination of anti-malware and does not know enough to do anything but use them out of the box.

Firecat's evaluation is a factor in the choice of KIS over KAV, and the difference in cost makes it more economical that separate paid programs.
Firecat are you currently using KIS?

    Thanks for the comments.

Someones prefer to have specialized programs for each kind protection, and have all the things in one program could be more easy to pass by hackers...

    Jerry,

My impression is that this reflects that many suites have marginal performance for some modules, tightly force you to use the entire suite, or end up with a collection of applications that is no different than a standalone best-in-class assembly.

KIS does do a few things right from the start:
    • You are able to either disable or not install/unistall selected modules. The ability to skip module installation altogether is important in that this is probably the best approach to avoid conflict with low level components (example - the KIS Proactive Defense module)
    • Each of the modules appears to be a reasonably solid standalone contender. Some are certainly not best in class if you want configurability, but that's not a typical suite customer objective
    • The GUI is a nicely integrated single interface for the entire package. Good and coherently designed look and feel.
I think it depends on the context in which you use the application. For the AS component, I'd say that between KAV and the KIS AS module, they are as good as any standalone AS on the market. As to the firewall, if you are like me and are really just looking for outbound application control and don't wish to customize rules, it's seems as good as any standalone firewall.

Correct, and I believe it is on target to fulfill that objective.

Although directed to Firecat...., my current plans are to convert my KAV WS PC's to KIS. From comments on the KL forum, it seems as though KAV WS = KIS with network awareness and admin facility, although some of the main KL site postings run a little counter to this. In any event, assuming no surprises in product transition path, I am currently targeting those PC's to run KIS (Proactive Defense not installed)/BOClean/SafenSec (replaces KIS Proactive Defense). For my needs, SnS is a better match than the native KIS module, for most users the KIS module should be fine.

    Blue,
    Thanks, and very helpful.

I am considering KIS for my use when my subscriptions to BD, LnS, and Counterspy run out in Jan. It would be a less expensive way to go, although I have not had problems, but KIS might do a good job at less cost. I am also behind a hardware firewall.

I do have an impression that KAV is about as difficult to uninstall as Norton. I might suggest that Sunspot (from Candlepower forums) download a trial of KIS.

    Jerry,

LnS is not subscription, it will continue as is in Jan.

KAV has always been an easy uninstall for me. Somewhat less of a problem for product switching in my personal experience - which does date back to 2004 for Norton - but I didn't find Norton a problem with uninstalls either. It did leave traces behind which were ready removed using their manual tool.

No, not right now, though I did try it for a while. Its a nice solution, works well enough for me. Spyware detection is quite good (though I've yet to test adware/riskware detection), and the AV is, of course, top-notch.

The firewall is very good, had no problems with it. I do agree with BlueZannetti about the firewall, but I never needed much customization of firewall settings anyway ;)

Oh BTW the interface of KIS 2006 is really nice, best I've seen in a long time :)

BTW, I'll reply to your PM within 2 days, JerryM (Kinda busy right now) :)

    Thank you both.
Blue, I did not realize that LnS would continue. I have been pleased with it.

Thanks, Firecat. Stay busy, and you will not get into much trouble. :D
But maybe that depends on what you are busy doing.:D

I used Norton for about 5 years, and never had an issue. I also had no trouble uninstalling it, and the same was true on a friend's computer. I just had to uninstall, and search for remnants, but they removed easily.
