Jio Platforms throws its hat into video conferencing ring with JioMeet

Jio Platforms has launched its own video conferencing platform, JioMeet, to compete against the likes of Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet.

The new video conferencing platform allows users to make an unlimited amount of calls, in 720p, and each call can support up to 100 participants at a time.
Jio Platforms is the holding company of Indian telco Reliance Jio and has over 388 million subscribers.

JioMeet also allows all calls to last up to 24 hours. Comparatively, Google Meet offers all users the ability to host calls up to 24 hours through September 30, but after that date, these calls will be limited to 60 minutes for free users, and Zoom group calls hosted by free users can only last up to 40 minutes.

JioMeet currently does not have any paid plans so both personal and enterprise users have access to the same features, according to the app's terms and condition on its website.
JioMeet is available for use through the Chrome and Firefox browsers and can be added to Outlook via a plugin. It is also available as a standalone app on macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android.

JioMeet: A true-blue Zoom copy
Right of the bat, you’ll notice that everything in JioMeet has been copied from Zoom. Even the white-on-blue logo of the app is pretty much the same as Zoom’s.
You can sign up for JioMeet using your mobile number or email address and host unlimited free video calls with up to 100 participants.

Elsewhere, JioMeet functions in the same way as Zoom. It lets people share password-protected meeting links, create waiting rooms, share screens, chat during calls, and more. It even gives hosts the ability to control what other participants can or cannot do during a meeting, just like Zoom.

Where is JioMeet available?
It’s unclear right now if JioMeet is a global service like Zoom or if it’ll work only in India. However, some people in our team do have access to it from the Google Play Store in other parts of the world. Still, we’ve reached out to Reliance Jio to get more clarity on this.
The company has a tendency to offer free services when it launches a new product so we expect JioMeet to remain free-of-cost for some time. However, that might not be a permanent thing.

TechCrunch: India’s richest man takes on Zoom

The company did not provide any more details, including whether people outside of India could use the service. On its website, JioMeet claims all the meetings are “encrypted” but does not elaborate whether these calls are end-to-end encrypted.

In a call with analysts earlier this year, Jio executives had described JioMeet as a platform that they think would some day have features to enable doctors to consult their patients, prescribe them medicine, and have a system in place to let them buy medicines online and get test results digitally.
