I have just become a licensed NOD32 customer after having NOD32 installed for 30 days. And I just discovered that there is a new NOD32 V3 coming, this is very exciting. Is there a projected date for release of the final product?

    Hi.

Not sure of a release date as yet. The current ESS (which uses v3) is in beta at version 1b. Version 2 is due for release at some point then it depends on any other issues that arise.

Don't take my word for it but I would anticipate (maybe) Sept/Oct for official release! Not sure what anyone else thinks.

they first should test it with vista sp1 beta. sp1 is going to have kernel changes. why release ess before then?

Because Eset's market window and opportunity continues to shrink. Most people buy 1 AV/SS (security suite) subscription and don't buy another until it comes time to renew. Generally they renew with the same product unless there are problems. Not to mention there are already decent suites out from Norton, KAV, ZA (KAV), BitDefender, F-Secure and others.

Features are slim on ESS relative to the competition and need to be beefed up or all the competitors will throw a F&B comparison on their product pages and collateral. Picking ESS off from a positioning perspective will be ridiculously easy, I know, I do it to my competitors all the time. All the PC magazines will highlight the lack of features as well... guess who reads those articles, the people that typically buy an SS.

SP1 has been delayed, won't happen in Sept according to the latest news. Can't wait for MS, look how long it took them to put Vista out.

Granted I'm not saying they should release a buggy product, but "until it's done" doesn't work too well when you're late to the game and lacking features the competition has.

I've been a fan of NOD32 for a few years but I find it difficult to support Eset at the moment given what's happened with ESS.

Not that I'm a big source of income for Eset or anything, but that policy is also a little bothersome to me, too.

"It will be released when it is ready" is exactly the reason why my customers decide to go for NOD32 and not any of the other products which sometimes seem to be "not really ready" or "the 1.0 final is appears actually a release candidate".

I remember the same reasoning "released when it is ready" with the 2.0 release as well as the 2.7 release of NOD32. Software should only be released to the general public when one is pretty confident it's ok. ESS is not that perfect yet.

    Why??

    I commend them for it...

You're kidding, right? Norton (and Macafee) are two things that I *beg* my customers to let me uninstall...

What features? System slowdowns? Nasties slipping through?

Specifics would be nice... what, precisely, is missing?

I guess I can see as a reseller this would be much more of an issue - but as a user, I couldn't care less.

Also, remember - you're complaining about 'missing features' from an unfinished, unreleased product.

Most of the 'features' that are not in NOD32 (and most likely ESS) are features that I don't *want* in there... it is called 'bloat', and one of the many reasons I use NOD32 in the first place.

Well now that's just plain stupid. How in the world can you can a product with a lot of features bloatware? Nope. Ypou're not even close. Bloatware occurs when a product takes up a needless amount of system resources in order to provide features that are available elsewhere without the system resources cost; a la Norton 2000-2006. Seriously, if you're going to bitch about something at least get your definitions right. By your definition version 2.7 would be 'bloat'ware.

P.S. You are never going to find any product that has just the features you want and none that you don't. Products are not made for the individual.

As explained many times. NOD32 v3 and/or ESS will be bundled with Duke Nukem Forever.

Sounds nice and all but I think it is about time for beta2. We all have bugs and I would for one would be very happy when they are solved in a newer version. besides that I'm curious to see what new stuff ESET comes up with.

I'm sorry but you clearly have'nt a clue what your talking about.

Firstly, Symantec have'nt released a decent suite in their history, their security suites have always been badly performing bloatware, the rest of your little list doesn't compare too favourably either. Just because something is released first doesn't mean it's better.

Secondly, ESS is not "slim" in features as you describe it, it is and will be a fully inclusive security suite, how many of the other AV packages already have/had anti-rootkit capability? Since Windows Defender is already free, this along with ESS will be entirely sufficient.

ESS, as NOD32 has done, will outperform most, if not all, of the competitors, that is why NOD32 does such good business, because people who know about these things buy it.

Just because something has lots of bells and whistles, it's no good if they're all out of tune ;)

Windows Vista SP1 has been released to a very select beta group (MS learning from past farces? Obviously so they can know who, if anyone, has released it to the community) and is not slated for general release until November 2007 (which is a woefully short beta period for such a major release but they are being pressed by manufacturers to get it out)

I, for one, trust ESET to spend their time on ESS and release it when it is ready, they should know their userbase and know what they expect and deserve. Look at the unmitigated disaster that is Live OneCare and Microsoft have the sheer gall to charge customers for that when it is nowhere near finished. Just wait.

I will certainly be buying ESS when it's released, whenever that is.

I feel stupid having read these posts. NIS 2007 is actually a decent security suite. Read and educate yourself. And there are others... KIS7, BitDefender etc... again, educate yourself.

Spare me the emotional fanboy responses. I've been using NOD32 for years, probably either of you even heard of it. It's just software. There are plenty of tests that prove that there are other comparable alternatives on the market. Eset is not a dominant player in the AV business, great product but they aren't a big dog, or even a medium sized dog.

At the same time, as a consumer, one hits a point where you wonder what the hell is going on and if they can't get it together when you look at the timeline. You need to decide whether or not you want to support the company this round.

Again I'll say it again since some folks seem to have reading comprehension issues... I am by no means suggesting that they release buggy software.

There is bloat and there is good coding and implementation. Other suites have been subjected to crappy architecture and poor coding *cough NIS2000-2006 anyone. My guess is that ESS will be buttoned up pretty well when it's released. However, one way to tackle unnecessary features is custom install options that enable users or sys admins to selectively install features they want. Take a step back and look at the target market for ESS... it isn't us.

FYI... Generally after a couple betas you move into release candidates. One would hope by beta 2 you have your featureset nailed down. Not the best idea to introduce new features in a release candidate.

    Rezjor is my hero.

Just reading won't help anybody educate . Reading posts/articles that NIS is good won't at all make it good ... and vice versa . :thumb:

I can't say anything about the Norton 2007 line, but NAV 2008 beta is a great product (speed- and interfacewise). It's not the crap it used to be.

I'm crossing my fingers for a speedy release of the new NOD, too.

I am glad about some of the posts I've read in this thread. Asking if there is a projected timeline for the release of a second beta is not an unreasonable request, and anyone who has spent ten minutes on fora is long-since tired of posts stating that "it will be ready when it is ready." Why even bother to make that sort of response? Secondly, ESS has been "promised" and discussed for a LONG time and the current beta, at least as far as I can tell, is not ready for formal release as a 1.0. In a way, I hate to say it, but I bet that Comodo's version 3 firewall (coupled with an antivirus such as NOD 32) will end up being the choice of many folks. Don't get me wrong, I wish ESET the best and have encouraged its use on many other persons' computers... Now you can post and tell me how I'm too simplistic, etc. Thanks! CHUCK :D

that is the projected release of the suite, not the beta version 2. That should be soon. But the official release is slated in about 2 months. In all fairness to all these vendors, it also hinges on when Microsoft releases SP1 for Vista. It is hard to tweak when you dont have the blueprint.
