I am looking to replace Norton Internet Security but I am unsure of what would be best to replace it with. I need something that will handle EVERYTHING as I do business from home. I have heard maybe Bit Defender or Kapersky but wonder if there are some additional that would be better and easy for a novice to use.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Angela

Both are very good suites along with Avira and others. I would recommend to try them out first and then choose which better suits you.

With latest KIS 2009 you can opt for an 'automated' mode at initial installation, this way requests from the program for user interaction will be keep to a minimum.

    I'd reccomend KIS 2009= Antivirus+AntiSpyware+AntiRootkit+AntiKeylogger+Firewall+AntiPhishing+AntiSpam+AntiBanner+Adblocker+HIPS+VirtualKeyboard
Including Proactive Protection and Self Defense
You can't say that it doesn't handle all :D

    Hi

I think in Security Suite's Kaspersky is one of the most full featured and best.

ZoneAlarm Extreme Security is in beta, but it looks very promising, almost all the features of KIS and also sandbox.

Don't forget easy to use interface. Wait, maybe that isn't a feature?

    But it definitely doesn't have a sandbox.

Most security suites will provide you good protection provided you exercise a little bit of common sense too.

Take care in not doing 'feature' comparisons. The core of most suites is a good antivirus/spyware engine.

Kaspersky tends to come out on top with in AV tests but Bit Defender wont be too far behind.

Beyond that, you need to evaluate your security needs as a business. What do the threats come from and which suite offers protection in that area? Do you use gmail to host your mail? If so then emails are scanned and filtered already, so the performance of spam filters and pop3 scanning isnt as important. What about browsing? Are you the only person on your business computer? If not, consider using a service like opendns, mcafee site advisor or linkscanner to filter out questionable websites. The list goes on.

Most importantly, take advantage of their free trials and see how the software you want use affects your system in terms of speed and performance. Because security suites tend to need to hook deep into windows, there can be conflicts and this will cause problems.

But the poster did say "I need something that will handle EVERYTHING"

I assumed this meant one product. I could be wrong.o_O

Well from the way I see it the poster wanted one product which provides maximum protection with minimal configuration, and most people who replied (including me) seems to think it is currently Kaspersky Internet Security Suite.

Why? Is there any other security suite that offers a Sandbox besides Norman?

Angela, I can't tell whether you are looking for a "shotgun" approach to internet security, i.e., one single product that tries to do all, or a layered approach, i.e., a few different products that are specialists in their respective fields. I believe the latter is the best approach and it's not that daunting to achieve (I'm certainly not a computer wiz). Attached is a link to a good, very recent article about internet security written by Gizmo Richards (he has a popular and respected web site). You might find it helpful.
    http://www.techsupportalert.com/issues/issue158.htm#Section_0

Understandably, you will get a myriad of opinions here and elsewhere regarding best ways to obtain internet security. As an fyi, I have Windows XP Service Pack 2 and I use Internet Explorer 7 as my browser. My security measures include: Sandboxie (wouldn't go on the 'net without it), NOD32 for my antivirus, SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot S&D (on demand only) for my anti-spyware and a hardware router for my firewall. It's nice to see that Sandboxie and NOD32 are also used by Gizmo Richards and they are my favorites. I'm thinking about dumping one or both of my anti-spyware programs because I've found little need for them due to Sandboxie. Lastly, at your skill level I would not recommend you use a software firewall with HIPS (you'll see some of them mentioned in Gizmo's article). They can be very confusing to those of us who haven't reached the pinnacle of computer mastery yet.

I thought Norman's sandbox was part of heuristics. Sandboxie, SafeSpace, ForceField and others can sandbox any application, like web browser, e-mail, etc.

FF can't sandbox any application- browsers only.

Yes so you assume. I gave a broader answer telling her to consider the choice based on her business situation and software compatibility.

"Most recommended" if you take market share as a proxy, is Norton. Doesn't mean it is the best.

Be aware, some of these products are free for personal and commericial use. Others are free for just personal use. If it is used on a computer which you carry out business on, you may still need to pay for a license.

OK I see what you mean.

But most recommended on Wilders does not mean the market share.

I agree that KAV is great. However, because I dont have IT experience from a business perspective, I have no understanding of why Symantec has the greatest market share. There must be a reason that it is so maybe Angela needs to investigate why at the consumer level, we prefer KAV but at the enterprise level, businesses prefer SAV and determine which fits her needs.

The reason why I didnt make any assumption on what she wanted (I mean yours was quite reasonable) is because I know that as a customer, I get really pissed off when sales ppl just assume.

Once I went to a laptop retailer and asked if they stocked low end thinkpads. He didnt have any and proceeded to try to sell me something they had in stock. This was fair enough as he wanted to sell me his range of products. I told him politely that what he was offering was not what I wanted. He then started to tell me that as a comsumer, what I'm supposed to want from a laptop. I had a problem with that because sales should never make an assumption about what a potential customer wants but instead, ensure that they understand the costmer and their needs.

    Cheers
    Jeremy

    OK I see you point.

I think part of the reason Symantec is the biggest is because they've been around a long time (26 years according to Wikipedia) and at the time they started it was the one of the best in terms of detection.
