Shortly after unveiling its potential Android replacement, Huawei seems to be working on a Google Maps alternative. The embattled Chinese phone-maker is developing a mapping service called Map Kit, according to the state-owned China Daily, with plans to unveil it in October.

It's apparently designed to use a tool for software developers to create apps based around its mapping capabilities, rather than for consumer use. It'll connect to local mapping services, cover 150 countries and regions, and be available in 40 languages, the report said.
Russia's Google equivalent Yandex and Booking.com parent Booking Holdings are partnering with Huawei on the service, China Daily noted.

Dutch navigation and digital mapping company TomTom on Friday said it has closed a deal with China’s Huawei Technologies for the use of its maps and services in smartphone apps.

The deal with TomTom means Huawei can now use the Dutch company’s maps, traffic information and navigation software to develop apps for its smartphones.
TomTom spokesman Remco Meerstra said the deal had been closed some time ago but had not been made public by the company.

TomTom has announced that its Go Navigation app is available on all major app platforms, including Huawei’s App Gallery. It’s also available from Google Play and Apple’s App Store. It offers up-to-date 2D and 3D maps as well as many of the staples of better navigation apps. These include real-time traffic, speed camera alerts, lane guidance, and data-saving offline maps.

Huawei was reported to have struck a deal with TomTom to use its mapping data for an in-house app. However, with this app’s availability, you don’t need to rely on that partnership to get driving directions.
However, TomTom Go Navigation may give you more of a reason to stick with the Chinese tech giant’s devices or to keep them on your shortlist if you were already thinking of buying one.
