I'm interested in your thoughts on encryption. I concur that it's a good idea to encrypt your hard drive or data when traveling with a laptop. I've encountered a significant amount of misunderstanding on encryption, though (even amongst geeks). It seems that some people don't realize that while the encrypted volume is mounted, it is plain text & readable by all. It's only encrypted when you unmount it or shut down the computer. Have you found that as well?

 

Yup. The idea is to encrypt data to not be accessible when not in use.
