I am setting up a new home network in the new year and would like to know what would be the best software firewall to use on the gateway machine, in total there will be three machines networked together all running Win 98 SE.

    Many Thanks

    My personal opinion, ok?
Outpost, Kerio, Tiny, Sygate, Look N Stop, are all good firewalls with various degrees of difficulty in using with a network. Za is good for the person that just wants to setit and forgetit. Your security is in proportion to the effort you put into it, so you might have to try different ones to see which is best to your liking.
Please, only one firewall on your machine at a time. If you uninstall one, make sure you shut it down all the way first, and then clean up after you uninstall with something like jv16 power tools.

Should the firewall be a PRO version, I was thinking of Sygate home network with Sygate Free Firewall, if so I dont fancy paying the high price tag for Sygate PRO so maybe I'll go with ZA PRO or NPF. o_O

    Many Thanks

I don't have the answer to that. I know with Outpost, you would need the Pro version to support a network. With the other firewalls, I guess you need to read the product information to see if the free version supports networking.
I thought Sygate Home Network had the firewall incorporated. Did you check that?
