Wilders has been such a help in the past I thought I SHOULD post to see if ANYONE can help me THIS time...

I was not sure where I should post it so I have put it here - if it should be elsewhere please advise ....

    Bios Password word Lock problem

I bought a refurbished Dell D600, 60 GB laptop running WinXP SP2 .. It has a legit winxp license but came with no Recovery /Driver CDs .

A few days ago experienced blue “Kernel data inpage error – and basically advice was “if 1st time you see this just reboot machine” so I did … approx 1 hour later happened again – so followed ”if seen this before follow steps below”

Up popped Dell screen effectively telling me “Primary HDD was protected by password authenticated … system and that I could not access disk without the password” . BUT I had not set one had only set user acct pwords !

I tried rebooting many times and could NOT get past this screen , in the end left it a few hours. to search on web for some more suggestions… and contact reseller etc..

The reseller comp I bought it from again confirmed they had definitely set NO passwords, which is exactly what I had been told when I purchased it, so having searched on web and seen zillions of entries from people in same situation ( saying Dell could help with an override password which will unlock bios with master password generated from service tag ended with -595B) phoned Dell Customer Serv.

Initially they were happy to help I explained my situation and they were confident it could be fixed no probs.. They asked for my serv tag- but the label on underside of laptop was impossible to read, so then they asked for another no (COA I think) also impossible to read so we used (Fn & F2 power on) key got into setup found my serv tag.. which ends in 595B..

BUT next Dell explained although this was a personal use laptop now it HAD been a company laptop and they needed to know the name of the comp the laptop was last registered to.. So of course I gave the comp I bought it from and said I could send them copy of proof of purchase too – nope they wanted the one BEFORE that .. of course I don’t know this..

Without this info Dell could not give me the password to override the problem..arrrgh !!! They tried to do some diags but Laptop prompted for install CD – which as you know I don’t have … Dell managed to do some tests and told me they were concerned my HDD was facing an imminent failure.. and not to turn it off .. go get the company info from the reseller and call them straight back..

Called the resellers to ask for Company info , it transpired they deal with a clearing house – whose job it is to wipe them and ensure laptops have no bios or pwords etc BEFORE selling them to reseller.. and they of course “have no records for individual machines” .. grrrr so now I have a laptop & cannot access bios and reluctant to use the “paper clip method” to short circuit the chip .. as detailed here: http://www.download.centre4service.com/home.html

Again I searched on web and found some excellent sites & various Dell Bios password finder tools – that were getting other users out of similar situations … BUT my HDD Tag ends with 595B and this is one of the ones that just won’t work with the various tools I found.. I read this info but still tried for myself and indeed it does not work.. I found ONE site http://www.spunlock.com/ that said it could help with 595B tags– BUT they want $95 or approx £50 to give me the password.. Which I cannot afford..

Some good news – many hours later for the hell of it tried booting laptop and it worked o_Oo_O so laptop is running just cannot get into Bios … took another backup immediately ..

Having had Dell say they though a HD failure was imminent I really want to run some diagnostics on my HDD which ones would you recommend – my HDD is Hitachi_DK23FB-60?

I have tried using SFC Scannow to check my HD - but it is prompting for windows CD grrr so having found my i386 folder - and the image for the winXp image stored on my laptop wanted to set laptop up to point to the i386 directory whenever it prompts for windows installation cd?

Unfortunately I seem unable to do this as I don't get given an option to choose a path.. is there another way to do this - ?

Out of interest is it possible to copy ALL the i386 files (i386 directory) to another location .. I have a Desktop 4550 Dell Dimension running XP SP2 .. is it possible to copy these files to DVD? to use on any Dell Xp SP2 pc ?

Finally my Dell Dimension 4550 DID come with Diag Disks - this was bought from Dell brand new - obviously the Win XP SP1 disks will be out of date ... although I recently bought SP2 Cd from Dell.. So if needed to do a reinstall and I were to use the restore feature it would be back to SP1 then I guess I could use the Sp2 cds - and I woudl be ok? OR?

So basically I was wondering would the Recovery disks from Desktop work on the D600 laptop?

I look forward to your replies

Many Thanks in advance for your time

    Hi Tamba,

Alright, you shamed me in. :D Perhap's not the most pressing, but enough to get you started.

"Having had Dell say they though a HD failure was imminent I really want to run some diagnostics on my HDD which ones would you recommend (my HDD is Hitachi_DK23FB-60)?" You may have already determined - Hitachi Support.

"I have tried using SFC Scannow to check my HD - but it is prompting for windows CD grrr so having found my i386 folder - and the image for the winXp image stored on my laptop wanted to set laptop up to point to the i386 directory whenever it prompts for windows installation cd? Unfortunately I seem unable to do this as I don't get given an option to choose a path. Is there another way to do this?" Step two may not work unless sp2 was integrated, or included on the original. Considering it's a Dell, review the first few link's after Scroogling keyword's "dell oem sp2 slipstream comcast."

"So basically I was wondering would the Recovery disks from Desktop work on the D600 laptop?"
OEM disk's? Wishful thinking but, nogo.

I've previously investigated some of this and will try to get back shortly. Tgell usually has something to add.
In case - XP's help & support should list the service code, RockXP or Keyfinder the product code.

    Update's: Pointer's on this page - http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic60815-3.html
That 595b sound's special so, not too confident this would work - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/CmosPwd

    I take you've been reading item's in Howard's post - http://www.techspot.com/vb/post344615-1.html?

This one, an alternate spin on your link - http://www.darkmagic.org/mike/dell-tag/dell/dell.html?
Shorting the correct pin's is leaning toward's the best method I've read so far.
