:) My own favorites are (in no special order)

    Bringing up Baby

    A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

    Dr. Strangelove

    Far from the Madding Crowd

    High Anxiety :D

Last minute addition but I am not positive the name of the movie, I think it is "To Be or not To Be" the original version has Jack Benny and the remake had Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft but the original was far, far, better!

Have you stopped worrying yet? Do you love the bomb? :)

    Great movie.

I enjoy watching old black and white movies. They are so expressive! There are many contemporaries I like too but I would rather speak of the classical ones before we all forget about them, Uguel

All right Mr. Perez, let see what I found. If I'm mistaken, let me know ok.

--Bringing up Baby,1938. Starring: Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant.
--A tree Grows in Brooklyn,1945. Starring: Peggy Ann Garner and James Dunn.
--Dr Strange Love, 1964. Starring: Peter Sellers.
--Far from the Madding Crowd,1967. Starring: Julie Christie

The book can be read online at:

    http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/maddingcrowd/section1.html

High Society,1978. Starring Mel Brooks and Ron Clark

Hope I got all dates straight.

Also, John Wayne movies were not bad either...Twas the good old time where the good took over the bad.

Right Mr. Blaze. Most of his movies were good. Never boring.
I like also Indianna Jones movies. ANW I enjoy all good adventure movies! :D
    Bye, Uguel

--Stevenson's Island...and some more classical adventure ones.--

Well, you may be right. I don't remember Pulp Fiction so much, I can't really tell. The list I put here isn't made by myself but from this site:

    http://www.afi.com/tv/movies.asp

There are many other good movies that aren't in this list. But these I put are among the more popular. Sure popular doesn't mean the best but rather the most widely known. If people put "their" best movies here that would be great.

    Bye. Uguel

Very good research, Ms. Uguel, although I never could get into reading any of Thomas Hardy's novels though some of his poetry is superb, esp. "Satires of Circumstance"!

Definitely! My favorites are "Unforgiven" and "Kelly's Heroes" :D

Right you are, Detox. I didn't notice it was'nt on the list though, personally, I have a preference towards "Animal House" . I definitely like Pulp Fiction but I don't really think it belongs on that list.

I see that "old" is a highly relative and very subjective term. ;)

Anything made later than say the mid 70s isn't all that old in my book. :D

Of the truly older movies in the list, I have to say that I was never quite able to get into CITIZEN KANE. I know, I know - they say it may be the best movie of all time... But, I guess I never quite got it.

BTW - I think Unforgiven is on TBS tonight.

LOL, In that regard :) it is my fervent wish to never see "It's a Wonderful Life". The constant repetition of it every Christmas season is SOOOoooo annoying!

Right. It all depends. And popular is often confounded by the best quality. But it isn't always the best quality. it's just that is kinda "enjoyed by most people".
As I said, it isn't an exhaustive list. Also, all movies here are in English whereas many other good movies have been made in other languages. ;) If I put all other good movies in this list it would be way too long! As I said, I never saw all of them but some of them. Of course, the thread is open to discussion.
People can add their own too!

    Bye, Uguel

It would be unfair not to mention a few foreign movies I liked.
--There are many more, but these are just a few-- ;)

    1. La dolce Vita by Fellini,1960.Starring: Alain Auney, Marcello Mastroianni.
    2. Angèle,1934. Starring: *Fernandel
    3. Die Blechtrommel, 1979. Mario Adorf,Daniel Olbrychski
4.(Not so long ago) Tous les matins du monde.1991.
    Starring: Gérald Despardieu, Guillaume Despardieu

They were good to me.*Fernandel was a funny actor with a broad smile and a Southern French accent.
I guess it's all I remember for now.

Yeah I knew you didnt make the list yourself :) it's still not a bad list I see some good stuff...

Pulp Fiction (im my opinion obvisouly) was just a movie witha decent enough story but they cut it up so things happened all out of order and millions of people just thought that made it some kind of awesome movie - especially when they were high or something lol... Didn;t do it for me though...

I also must admit I'm a decent Eastwood fan... love "Hang 'em High"...
I've always been one for seeing the bad guys get what's comin' and every time one of those guys sees the scar on Eastwood's neck when he comes to get 'em and realizes who he is... i wanna yell yeee ha lol

Regarding foreign movies, I've seen very few and the only one I saw that I liked enough to recall (and it is definitely a movie that I like a lot!) is

Mon Oncle (1958 - with Jacques Tati)

The other movies with the Hulot character are good to but "Mon Oncle" is priceless!

Oh, and I remember the shortfilm "The Red Balloon" from when I was a little kid, does that count? :D

---And a very brief account:"They made two mistakes... they hanged the wrong man, and they didn't finish the job---

---Yes, I know that one...and the guy had a scar that made him unforgettable for his enemies.Thanks!---

---I still enjoy these western. They don't show them very often on TV though...Some good Rent-a-Movie shop have them. ;)---

---Is that the one who was working in a parisian shop, making pipes..?---

---That guy was almost flying. Very agile and quick.---

Twas very interesting. And not in the list... I enjoyed the former Star Trek movies... (don't like the new series much) Mr. Spock exercised such a fascination on me when I was a kid. Think they were the best crew of ever.

    Uguel,

Mon Oncle is the one where Hulot's brother has the ridiculously ultra-modern house and where he himself lives in an old/haphazardly designed apartment building. And has the scene where the kids (including Hulot's nephew) take turns (and place bets) on tricking passersby into walking into street lamps :D No dialogue at all in the movie, just sounds/noises and the tune played on an accordion.

I would love to get that movies on DVD but it is still only available on VHS :(

    Seeya

Sounds very funny. I think I'll rent it. I'm on vacations for 2 months...
(Oh no! you may see that Uguel too much here!)
    Nay!...I'll be away soon....Don't worry! :D

Well, about the DVD, you are more "modern" than me. Sure, I can put a DVD in my computer...but I would rather watch it on TV for the screen is much larger. We still own a VCR but we don't have DVD reading device on the TV yet. Still, I can get the cassette at the video shop though.

    Bye! Uguel ;)
