Gator Digital Wallet Allows Hacker Back Doors

Gator, a digital wallet program installed on millions of computers, contains a security flaw that could enable malicious sites to take control of a user's computer.
According to security researchers, an ActiveX plug-in installed with the Gator program can be hijacked by attackers and used to place back-door software or other "malware" on the victim's computer.

Officials at Gator Corp. were not immediately available for comment. According to the company's site, the Gator program has been installed on more than 10 million computers and is the Web's leading digital wallet.

Gator comes bundled with some free software programs such as the AudioGalaxy music sharing application and is designed to make Web browsing easier by automatically filling in information such as passwords and credit card numbers at sites visited by users.

The ad-supported program includes a component called OfferCompanion that delivers ads to users based on the sites they visit.
