    Are there any free alternatives to SD and DeepFreeze which also have the ease of a "shadow" mode? I found Returnil to be a little tedious.

    Returnil is your best bet period for free. It really isnt hard to use. If you only want to isolate your web browsing, Geswall straight out of the install button. But for free, Returnil cant be beat.

    Returnil is the only freeware, the rest costs money.

    Returnil is actually about as easy to use as it gets and it works great (IMO). It is free to use for one year but then it ceases to function. After that you are supposed to be able to download a new version and start over.

    Unfortunately Power Shadow is no longer free.

    Makav3l1,

    What is difficult about Returnil? All you have to do is right-click the icon and choose Session Lock or double-click the icon and then click the Session Lock bar to enter Shadow mode. To exit Shadow mode, you reboot. Very simple :).

    Depends on what you want to use the virtualising for. If you just want to try out certain software then Altiris SVS is free and works well. If you want to live dangerously then you'll want something like returnil or else use virtual machines.

    The current free virtualisers are;

    Altiris-Safe Space-Forcefield-Returnil.

    Of course more broadly there is Virtual Box-Virtual PC-Sandboxie(nag ware).
