Firewall And net connection speed.

Hi, guys.

I couldn't really find an answer...

Is is possible that ESS's firewall could slow down a wireless internet connection? I'm currently evaluating ESS for both my laptop and my girlfriend's desktop.

She asked me on the weekend if I had installed anything when I did some cleaning on her system, as her connection speed was horrible. The first thing I did was disable the firewall and that returned her to normal immediately.

Now, I ask if it's possible only because that surprised me. I don't even know ESS is here on my Vista laptop. Her Desktop is running XP sp2, no other security software running/installed other than ESS.

Any ideas why this would be so??

I did have her's set to automatic mode, where mine is interactive.

I have ESS installed on a laptop with Vista Business edition and there is no difference in the internet speed whether it is operating on wireless or wired network. You would probably need to check it on a number of occasions as it may just have been the wireless connection at the time.

I have noticed no performance problems on systems when testing ESET Smart Security with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and 3G EDGE wireless modems connections, however, that is not to say that one could not occur or that a problem is occurring with the performance of the wireless connection on your girlfriend's notebook computer.

If you previously had another security program on there, then you may want to try re-running its uninstallation program. Some security programs require additional steps be performed in order to remove any leftover program files or changes made to the Windows system registry prior to installing another security package.

Also, before attempting to reinstall ESET Smart Security, try resetting the TCP stack on the computer by opening a Command Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE) and issuing a "%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\NETSH.EXE INT IP RESET C:\RESETLOG.TXT" command, per Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 299357, "How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP." This can revert any changes made to the networking stack by the old security software. The instructions in that article also apply to newer versions of Microsoft Windows as well, such as Microsoft Windows Vista.

You may also wish to check with the manufacturer of the notebook computer or the wireless network chipset inside it and see if newer device drivers are available. If they are, go ahead and try installing them first before attempting to reinstall ESET Smart Security.

I had ESS running with uTorrent and they were not compatible. An instant slowdown as soon as i started uTorrent. I've dropped back to NOD32 and Comodo firewall (free and very good) and my problems have disappeared. Do a search for utorrent in this forum and you will see similar problems with ESS.

I reset the TCP stack as suggested and it seemed fine, but my girlfriend just told me that it seems to be doing it again. So, I'll need to investigate more...it's probably not the ESS firewall.

 

Well, I'm fairly certain now that it's ESS's firewall causing the problem.

The connection will be fine for a little while and then start to "crap" out. As soon as I disable the firewall, it's fine.

I have no idea why this would be the case. Hopefully I can get it figured out within the next few days--my trial period is ending so it may just be the antivirus I go with on my girlfriend's system and ESS on mine...

It's actually a desktop with a USB wireless adapter.

Anyway, she only had AVG free (7.5) on there and was running XP's firewall. I uninstalled avg completely and disabled XP's firewall. I then cleaned out the system (registry etc etc etc) before ESS was installed.

I haven't had a chance to do more testing, but I'll have another look over the next day or two...
