    Hi,

I have an 80gb IDE drive with two partitions (not equal size), both contain Windows XP, both primary and the first one active. The first partition has the ntldr and boot.ini on it and both partitions can boot fine. I took images of each one (separately) and each image restores correctly.

I have now replaced that drive with another 80gb one, I have restored the partitions individually. The first one boots fine and works as normal, however, the second partition starts too boot with the black Windows XP screen with progress bar, it enables the usb devices, I then get the blue Windows welcome screen, with the Windows XP logo on and dark blue bars top and bottom, the mouse cursor appears and can be moved with the mouse, but then it just sits there, no drive activity or anything!?! I *think* I set the partitions to be the same size as on the original drives, but the drives are different models, same manufacturer and size though.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Try hitting Alt/Esc or Ctrl/Esc at that point. You may find (hopefully) that there's a password request form hiding behind the screen that you're stuck on.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks but it didn't work.

I think that the second partition that fails to boot fully into windows has the wrong drive letter. I formatted the partition and reinstalled windows, and due to my drive configuration, the partition was labelled I: (old drive was H:), it all booted fine, then I changed the letter to H: and rebooted and it stopped working and displayed exactly the same screen as before when using the image.

I put the image back onto the partition and specified it assign the letter H:, rebooted and it was the same as before. Using XP recovery console I notice the letter is I: not H:. Is there any way I can assign the correct letter without having to boot into Windows? It appears that Windows in the image file thinks it is installed on partition H: but restoring puts it on I:?!!?!

Incidentally, in my first windows installation (C:) the second partition shows correctly as H:!?!?!?!?

I figured it out, all working now!

I have Alcohol 120% installed on my first Windows partition (C:), and had it set up with a virtual CD drive (for use with ISOs). It appears that imaging the hard drive with this virtual CD drive in place caused the problems. I removed the virtual drive, re-imaged the drive, restored it onto my new drive and all works perfectly!

That's very interesting. I have a GAMES partition on my drive and I did have Alcohol 120% installed there. I've since replaced it with something else (can't remember at the moment) because I only wanted the virtual drive feature. I'm starting to use TI9 to image my partitions but I'll bear your problem in mind. I would suspect that Acronis Tech support would be interested directly in your findings if the moderators haven't already picked it up.

I wouldn't be running TI9 from my GAMES partition so I'd guess that it wouldn't matter about the state of Alc120.

    regards
