Dr. Web

Used Dr. Web before the big upgrade last year and was not very happy with the terrible slowdown with the new version 4.33, but I wonder how things are working out now with the latest version.
They still offer the 50% off when switching AV.
I would just like to know how Dr. Web is running nowadays, before trialing again.

 

Personally i dont know what they are doing. I mean they have a good Hive Detection on Trojans with the old version, but how could they failed with the new version released, thats what i dont understand, i dont think they can make a worse Heuristic Detection on trojans then old version´s, but now i know this can also happend. If the old version has a very good detection, the new release version could maybe be worse, and we have seen it at av-comparatives.

But i still like it very much.

 

I've been using DrWEB for three years now. Most of the bugs that caused slowdown problems with the version 4.33 release are worked out now and it has been running very well for me. The Process Guard issue is also cleared up. I was also very surprised at the doctors rather poor showing at the latest AV Comparatives test. Not sure what to make of it since this version was such an upgrade. I still like DrWEB though.

 

Thanks for the replies....and I'll give it a try again! I've always liked it as well, because of it's simple configuration etc.

 

HiVE is just a trademark name for BitDefender heuristics, not a common term for heuristics detection.

 

Most users here are running the latest version without any problems at all.

If you look closely at the REPORT sections of the tests this is probably a reflection of the very slow rate of adding MISSED samples to the database by the analyst(s) over at Dr Web. It seems to be the slowest in adding these samples compared to the other AV vendors. Further, it may also be due to giving ITW detection priority over that of zoo malware. If the analysts are hard pressed then zoo malware detection may take a back seat.

I would be very surprised if the new version with the added spyware/adware detection and the soon to be released HTTP scanner proved to be inferior in detection compared to the older versions. I am much happier with v.4.33 and feel that I am better protected than in using the older versions of Dr Web.

Just some comments on detection quality.
BlackCat is right, the overall detection is very much better with 4.33 and later engine upgrades (hope you didn't miss the latest one in March). We are concentrating on what is being reported to us from users (and there are dozens of them daily) - and have some zoo collections reviewed at a special schedule. This is why we may have some problems at some AV-comparatives. However, we follow those of http://virusscan.jotti.org/ which shows us the actual state of ITW virus detections.
I hope we shall bring you some more satisfaction shortly - probably next week with our new shield functionality beta release.

a warm welcome to Wilders and good to see another member of the Dr Web team dropping by.

Looking forward to trying out the next beta of the HTTP scanner ( the new shield?).

Further, hoping you can catch up with the missed samples from av-comparatives.

 

Have Dr. Web up and running again and so far I find it very smooth all together. No slowdowns when copying or deleting large exe files, which was the reason for me to stop using Dr. Web after the 'big' upgrade. I'll keep a close eye on it this week and report back when I have seen and felt more. Also, good to know about the new shield functionality which will be brought out soon.
So far.......nice and smooth scanner again.

As to the *March* engine upgrade that you mentioned, I have Engine 4.33.2.02271 that is dated 2006-02-27. Is this the latest one?

 

Thats the same engine version I show here. I rather miss having the virus record info on the main website. Having the latest updated info on DrWEB available would come in very handy...

 

Oh, yes, that was the last update. Sorry for this confusion , we had some releases in the beginning of March - and the time flies so quickly.
Yes, 4.33.2.02271 is the latest one.

Update on using Dr. Web for a few days now:
- allround speed on opening programs/files is very fast and find it faster compared to Nod32

Yes, looks good so far and still find it one of the better AV scanners and like to stick with it beacause of its simple configuration.

I agree, I have tried quite a few which shall go nameless. I have always found that the good ole' Doctor is pretty hard to beat overall...

 

Can imagine that there are a lot of Dr. Web users around......I'll keep an eye on the developments soon and enjoy the trial period and see what I'll be using after that, but this feels very good so far!

Hope it stays that way again.....for me it has been a bit dark for a while and switched to Nod32, which I still think is great, nothing bad about that one.
But somehow I feel more comfortable with the 'simple' but strong Dr. Web.
Is the same with women.......

 

The only annoying thing I notice now......every once in a while there's a website pop-up with a notice to register and or buy Dr.Web and I would like to know how to switch that off!

 

Now thats a new one on me. Sounds like they want you back as a registered user eh?..
