I currently use KAV5 (and very pleased with it) and have been trying out KAV2006 betas (which so far have impressed me immensely). My KAV license runs out in a couple of months and I have intended renewing in anticipation of KAV2006. However, I have recently changed jobs and have been offered to use the firm's Mcafee Virus scan enterprise v8.0 (as I will sometimes use my personal PC for company use).

My dilemma is to renew KAV for KAV2006 for and all it's additional protection or take my firm's 'freebie' VSE8.0. I know VSE is generally highly rated but my concern is that it is a bit 'outdated' compared to the features available in the latest generation of AVs like KAV2006 with proactive protection, registry protection and http scanning etc. not to mention how much lighter it appears to run compared to VSE.

My dilemma is not so much saving money by using the 'free' VSE but if it will give a level of protection that is close enough to what KAV2006 will offer to make it a no brainer not to accept it.

I do use P2P ocasionally and I do surf dangerous sites sometimes. I also have BOClean (which so far has had to anything running alongside KAV).

I would appreciate any opinions on this.

    Thanks.

If the Mcafee version you are talking about in the corporate (which is a lot better than home) I would seriously consider that. However with KAV 6 you get the kaspersky engine (and defs) plus the added features of version 6. I would use KAV if I were you and money is no issue. Either way you'll be protected.

Why no try Mcafee Virus scan enterprise until Kav 6.0 is released and then install this and see which one you like the most, this will give you some time to aquinted with Mcafee and a better view on which to go with when the Kaspersky license is about to expire.:)

If that's the case, I would go with KAV :)

I have been using it at work, but obviously at work I'm not putting it to the test by surfing any risky sites or using P2P. It also seems to run a lot of processes and uses much more memory than KAV but saying that it does seem to run fairly transparently.

I do like VSE in that it seems very unobtrusive but I also really like KAV and I especially like the features of the 2006 version.

I guess what I am trying to ascertain from my thread is opinions on whether this fairly 'old' app is up to the job these days compared to the 'modern' generation of AVs. If it was straight choice between VSE and KAV 5 then for free I would be fool not to use it but compared to the added protection of KAV2006 I'm not so sure.

McAfee is quite good, no doubts about it, but in this case, I would recommend you to stick to KAV - either way, both are excellent protectors. :)

McAfee Enterprise actually has a lot of similar features to KAV6, with a decent array of proactive detection (i.e. restrictions for execution from temp folder, writing to system32). For instance, the buffer overflow detection was able to stop the WMF exploit without any updates.
KAV6 has more extensive proactive features however, which I don't think McAfee Enterprise will ever have, since corporate products aren't suppose to give the user that much control.
Since McAfee only updates once daily (unless you use the beta definitions), KAV might be better.
Also, if your PC might be accessing a corporate intranet, never hurts to have some diversity.

I presently run the McAfee home version (10.0.27). I could switch for free to the enterprise version. But I have resisted doing this as I am a technologically unadvanced user ---- so I cannot clean up a dirty uninstall....

Is Enterprise that much better that it is worth it to uninstall the home version and install Enterprise? Additionally, I run the McAfee firewall. I can also switch to the McAfee enterprise firewall free. Is that something that is preferable too? Or would I stick with the present "Personal Firewal Plus?"

This is what I'm told are my choices for download thru my employer:

    For use with NT 4.0 w/ SP 6a; Win 2k Pro w/ SP1,2, or 3; XP Home/Pro w/ SP 1

Oh, and are there any who think that the McAfee home version is better than Enterprise?
