Curious recycle bin problem

Hi,

Here it is:

Recently, me recylce bin on one of the PCs (XP) gets slow sometimes.

I believe this happens only after connecting to several network drives of mine, copying, deleting files etc ... Not really sure, but could be related.

Anyhow, the recycle bin takes 10 seconds or so to display its contents - or delete the files therein. A reboot solves the problem.

No other problems whatsoever. Started only after connecting another network drive to another machine ...

Any thoughts?

The following issues are not at stake: viruses, bad hard disk etc ...

I'm nearly ignorant much of the time about what happens behind the GUI, so this is just an intuitive guess.

If you've been deleting from a number of different sources (you did mention network drives), any wild chance the delay is from looking up those sources, in case you want to restore?

Got some interesting leads from you guys here ... will try when the problem reoccurs - if, actually, since I'm not really sure how to reproduce it.

Will be keeping an eye on this.

Update:

Well, no suggestion mentioned helped ... the problem is somewhere else. And I am beginning to suspect it has nothing to do with the external drive. Deleting a local movie file resulted in the same behavior ... and it only happens sometimes.

Removing 3-4 other files beforehand, emptying the recycle bin, everything worked lightning fast. Then, I deleted this other file ... and the 10 second delay is there.

Not a single word from the Event Viewer, nothing ... total blank ...

SOLUTION: your local movie file- must be HUGE! ( sometimes )...

Update: it's nothing I have thought so far.

It seems to be related to one of the FAT32 partitions. For some reason, when I delete files on it, they do not go to Recycle Bin, but the Bin then gets slow.

However, after unmounting the partition, everything works smoothly again. After remounting, the problem went away for the time being.

The one thing I did with this local FAT32 partition was to upload files using FileZilla. On restrospect, I installed the latest version 3 approx. at the same time the problem started.

Could this be possibly related?

Any ideas? What could be the reason?

I have a resolution to this, if you're interested.

It turns out that Karen's Replicator was the culprit. When it copies from the FAT32 partition to another location in one of its scheduled jobs, it ignores the global exclusions for recycle bin, creating a situation where file handles are left open in some weird sort of a way.

The problem then causes recycle bin to churn through all these handles every time on deletion, working very slowly.

Closing Karen or unmounting the volume helps. Furthermore, formatting the partition as NTFS also solves the problem. I don't know the difference between FAT32 and NTFS recycle bin, but there you go.

I told you it was a funny one. But I nailed it ... Anyhow, why do I always get twilight zone cases?

I always configure my recycle bins independently. That is, not to allow one large recycle bin for all drives. Perhaps if each drive had it's own recycle bin then the fat32 deletes would stay on fat32. The downside or upside to this, depending on how you view it, is that you would have to empty each recycle bin on each drive. I don't mind so that is what I do.
