    Hi

    don't want to compare antivirus.

Would like to know how Comodo Firewall/Antivirus is with the latest release?

Can u compare Comodo Antivirus area with other antivirus or is Comodo antivirus still in its baby stage? or is it already much better? in detection prevention and features?

I've used it off and on since the beta release of version 3 and find it to perform smoothly. As far as detection rate, I've seen numbers ranging from around 50% to about 90% but can't vouch for the accuracy of any test.

Overall, I believe it is probably (as of now) not the antivirus application you want for your first line of defense, but I also believe Comodo is committed to making it a real top-drawer contender for the best free AV.

Give it, perhaps, another year to fully mature.

I see that you have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 in your signature.

For now, i suggest you to keep it.

Melih (CEO) Promised the AV to be one of the best, if not the best, from 12 months since launch of CIS (CAV 3), That was on October 26th 2008. So it's a matter of months...

    Cheers,
    Josh

Actually, the CEO is already talking about how the new CIS 3.8 is widening the gap between Comodo and other competitors. So maybe it's already here. ;)

Sure Comodo is improving but "attacking" companies with almost 3 decades of experience in antimalware technologies is not something you can be better just like that. And even if you could, other companies are not standing still, they are evolving and enhancing their technologies, so catching them is even harder.

The problem is this. Melih is all happy for Threatcast and the AV reducing the need for pop ups and user knowledge. But, fact is, a classical HIPS, will always require advanced user knowledge. Most antiviruses are heading towards behaviour blocking tehnology, which is IMHO, the way for the average Joe to go.

So, Comodo, in order to compete with the giants, will have to make many steps further in the AV sector. Gathering signatures is only one aspect of modern AVs. Soon a good behaviour blocker will be able to complement the lack of signatures and be much more effective in zero day malware.

CIS is already very secure for those who know to use D+, but for usability in average Joe, the future is AV with BB.

Very true.To put it into context with D+ fully enabled it'd be nigh on impossible for any malware to infect the system without generating any warnings, however only an experienced user would be able to fully understand and correctly act upon those warnings. So it gives bulletproof security but only to the tech minded. On the other hand BB technology is more accessible to those of all ability levels.Melih has stated the aim is for a near zero popup D+ in the near future,if that's the case then HIPS would finally be a tool for the masses.

I'm curious how 3.8 does in tests with other big name avs.

    It will only get better...

A completely re-written Memory Scanner with BOClean Signatures & Technology will be introduced in CIS v3.9, Hopefully out end of March. There will also be dramatic heuristics improvements in v3.9 as well.

    Cheers,

I can't wait for CIMA based heuristics. Current packer based detection is useless at best.

    Can't wait for it.

Comodo's D+ is pretty useless for security purposes. The antivirus is still weak, but what I can see it's showing improvement. I'm hoping there'll soon be a viable alternative to AVG/avast! for free AVs.

Do they make a stand alone Antivirus or do you have to get also CIS?

In what way is D+ useless? It's one of the best HIPS applications on the market o_O

It's not one of the best HIPS, just one of the more famous ones while better products fade to obscurity. And even if it were, it's still a HIPS - ergo, still useless.

I rate a program as useful if it serves its purpose while letting you use your computer in peace otherwise. Comodo D+ does no such thing.

That's really not a good argument for HIPS being useless. Just because you don't have the knowledge to use HIPS AND understand it, doesn't make it useless. That's like saying cars are useless because you don't know how to drive. (I assume you don't know how to use it or else you very likely would not be making such a "useless" argument.)

Ah, but therein lies the problem. If and when I know how to use a HIPS, then such a product becomes useless, because I would have enough knowledge about computers and security to keep myself safe through less unnecessarily troublesome means. Whereas on the other hand, knowing how to drive does not make the car useless.

Besides, you are making the common mistake of confusing between "knowledge" and "convenience". Just because I know a particular method of doing something, doesn't mean that method is good and/or useful. Take Linux. Many people may know how to compile source code into installation packages, but does that mean that a command-line terminal is better than a graphical installation wizard? No.

The problem with THAT argument is that you still at the very least need to set policies like SRP/LUA if you're not going to use HIPS, and you'll STILL run into the same issues you hate about HIPS. Your argument about HIPS being useless is still bogus if you're admitting you don't know how to use them. They aren't useless, what you really mean to say is they drive you nuts, which is a perfectly acceptable statement.

    That is your assumption.

And again, that is your assumption.

It seems that you're trying to counter my statement by arguing that I don't know how to use them. First of all, your argument is incorrect. Even if it were true, whether I - who am but one mere person - know how to use them or not has no bearing on the fact that they're useless.

They're useless because of reasons I've already explained. One is that they're useless unless one knows specific and intimate details about the OS file/registry system and process behaviors, at which point they become unnecessary. Another is that they cannot do their job and still let you use your computer in peace. You might as well start advertising the power cable as a means of security - pull it out of the socket, and hey presto! Guaranteed malware protection.

Discuss the facts instead of trying to make up suppositions about me and what I do, and we might get somewhere.

Comodo is one of those products you either love or hate. The D+ certainly lets you know what is going on. But the problem is that what is it telling you? Who exactly are the "Knowledgeable Hips interpreters" does anyone know one? The few that say they really know how to run D+ I suspect are a fabled few special individuals at the top of their profession. That is the reason that the Antivirus portion of Comodo needs to be top notch. There is no indication besides that of the Comodo verbiage that indicates they are improved or that Comodo is a competant AV. Would you trade Comodo AV for any of the top AVs offered by other companies? When some competant testing agency puts Comodo AV in the top 5 or 6 AVS I will try it out. I hope thay can make it work it would be wonderful. I like the firewall & use it, alone ,it is really a very Good firewall. The D+ is there & yes it might alert there is a problem but it most likely alerts that there is a potential problem when there is none

If it's not one of the best I presume you can give specific details of where it falls short in doing it's job?

You also state that other means are useful,I presume you're referring to sandboxing/virtualisation? Those are indeed excellent but it in no way validates your "HIPS is useless" assertion. It's like arguing that boats are useless because they can't fly.The primary purpose of HIPS is to monitor or inform upon every process within your pc environment, they do that. You can argue on whether or not they're too intrusive or chatty but useless is without any basis.

Of course if you were to say useless to you, then that may well be the case.
