Come off it Prevx!

Have just installed the Facebook edition of SOL.

SOL did its full scan on several re-boots, system CLEAN and all appears to be well.

I then created 2 TEXT files on my desktop. Nothing special, just some notes for myself.

SOL pops up and says that these files are infected and I must buy SOL to clean them.

After scanning them with Malewarebytes and MSE nothing is found of course.

Not impressed at all.

 

Maybe add some details about what the detection name/description page for these "notes" was?

Yes. I am very courios of what these notes of yours are/were. I'd love to re-create the problem.

 

SafeOnline and Prevx in general wouldn't scan text files as they don't contain executable content. If you could send a scan log to report@prevxresearch.com or the files themselves as suggested, we'll be able to investigate further

Well I WAS going to re-install SOL and try to duplicate the scan, as I previously uninstalled the software and gave up on it.

However, as you seem to be insinuating that I made it all up, I wont bother.

1. SOL certainly DID scan the text files, otherwise, it would not have reported the files as malware.
2. I know text files dont contain .exe content. That is why I was so shocked at the result.

Never mind. Lesson learnt.

 

Hmm - what they are saying is pure fact - SOL does not have a scanner (I can't however speak for the free facebook version of SOL, which I don't have, and may have prevx's free scan/non cleaning engine attached to it).

"Reading between the lines" is rarely accurate in written language (especially if you are irritated to start with - because if you are, that can skew any reading between the lines to the negative) - why not take them at face value and help them out?

Not at all - I'm merely looking to try to find the cause of it as it seems significantly out of the ordinary.

SafeOnline does scan the system, but it does not focus primarily on scanning because it's goal is to protect the user's credentials. However, it will notify the user of infections if they enter.

Just to clarify then - does SafeOnline have a scanner, or are you saying this as a simple way of explaining that it comes with Prevx's scanning engine (the bit that doesn't clean up anything it finds)?

I had always been under the impression that SOL was designed not as a scanner, but as a tool that prevents screen grabs etc.

 

SafeOnline does have the scan functionality of Prevx built in but it doesn't emphasize on it. It is indeed primarily mean to block keyloggers/screengrabbers/etc. but it can be used to scan as well.
