Best way to run AV from a clean environment? (ie f-prot for dos)

Only the system in question runs ntfs.
I recall that if I boot using the windows cd it only allows the repair etc options.

Is there a version of dos I can use from which to run f-prot?

What about aother avs, how do i boot my os from cd or floppy and be able to run an av like Norton for example.

    to ellaborate,

I presume I could use a PE disk for this, however that is something I've deferrred because I will want to make one for clean install, all my drivers etc at once, not something I have time for atm. I haven't looked into this at all yet.

The infected drive was attached to a presumably clean machine and
f-prot for dos was run from a command prompt (having been placed on the infected drive), but I have reservations about this having worked. Files were found in the ie temp folders containing virii and references to the hard drive on which the os was booted. EDITED for clarity: This is the first time the infected drive was attached to the presumed clean machine. The infected drive ran alone in an isolated machine. (except for the net) It has only one partition.

So, the presumably clean machine is now suspect.

    Any suggestions?

 Not even a: "You've clearly misread/misunderstood something, you know what you have to do, learn how to make a PE disk; do it right this time and stop wasting our time bonehead!" ?
