Here's what I am looking for:

A program that will regularly backup my documents and application data every few minutes or hours. I tried Acronis's continuous backups and when I restored the data was a mishmash and I couldn't restore all the data from a few days just a particular time slot. ShadowProtect is sector based and not file based so it's continuous incrementals won't work for me.

I saw in the forum that someone was making a bat file for drive snapshot but I didn't know if it did files only or not.

Why not. You can mount the image at any incremental point, and extract files from the image.

PS. Just tried from today's data. Works fine.

    Hey Peter,

I mean backing up just files and not the entire drive.
Just backing up my application data and my documents.

Drive Snapshot is a very reliable disk imaging system. It will allow backing up a full partition at one go. Not individual files.
You will however be able to restore individual files easily from a backed up image using a simple Windows GUI.

The Drive Snapshot automation system at http://code.google.com/p/drive-snapshot-automation uses batch files to automate drive snapshot backups. It is not involved with restoring from backup.

    Hi apathy,

Drive Snapshot can make an image-backup of a single disk-partition or of the entire hard drive (even if it has multiple partitions). DS is very small, very fast and very reliable, but it does not do disk-cloning or continuous incremental file backups (which sounds like what you are looking for). Nor does DS come with a 'Live Windows/Linux' recovery CD.

If you would like a single backup program that 'does it all', checkout Acronis True Image 2010. While it's a much larger program than DS (and slower in operation), it has all of the above mentioned features (and can be had for half the price of DS)! ;)

I have not tried True Image 2010, but I gave up on Acronis 2009 and started using Drive Snapshot because of the unreliability of Acronis TI (the ancient version 10 of TI was good but no longer works with modern hardware. Versions 11 and 12 (2009) were bags of bugs).

Apathy is looking for file backup. For that purpose I would ignore imaging software, like DS or TI. I would go straight to specialised backup or synchronizing software like Second Copy of Super Flexible Synchronizer.
