I have seen several ways to partition, but I am not sure what the best way to partition my main drive.

Currently my set up is: Dell laptop Inspiron 8600 with one, Drive C is 40gb one partition. It contains all my operational programs, the os (XP Pro SP2), and most of my data. D is my CD writer.

I also have a usb 160gb drive partitioned as E and F. E is 29gb and holds my photos and uninstalled program files I have down loaded. F is 119gb for backups.

What is the best way to partition my C drive? Leave it the way it is or divide it up? If I divide it what is the best way and how many gb per partition.

If you are using FAT32, limiting the partition to 8187MB will set the clister size at 4096 byes.

On my system, I set no FAT32 partition larger than 8187MB, but my uSB drives are FAT32 as a single partition as I use them only for backup.

All my drives are NTFS and clusters are 4gb. I have considered increasing the cluster size of my backup partition F to reduce fragmentations.

I hope that you meant that your cluster size is 4096 bytes, not 4GB.

See MSFT KB articles Q314878 and Q140365.
