EXPLANATION OF NEW FEATURES:

Reputation Services (FileRep)
Is a similar thing as WebRep in browser except it's designed to rate files. However here, only statistical data is involved and users don't rate the files themself. Depending on file prevalence, Behavior Shield and Auto Sandbox will be able to make more intelligent decisions regarding very new or possibly malicious files.
This feature is available in all versions of avast!.

Streaming Updates
Micro updates delivered every few minutes that provide additional protection against latest threats.
This feature is available in all versions of avast!.

Enhanced Auto Sandbox
New Auto Sandbox not only sandboxes and isolates suspicious apps, it now also analyzes sandboxed apps and provide summary to the user to easier make a decision if the app is indeed bad or not.
This feature is available in all versions of avast!.

Remote Assistance
This is a cool new feature that can give your more experienced friends or family members a full control over your computer. This is very useful if something goes wrong and you don't know how to fix it. You just click request remote assistance, avast! gives you a long random serial key that you tell to your friend or a family member by phone or instant messenger, the friend or family member enters that serial key in the avast! and voila, you have a full control over that system. No need to deal with IP addresses and complicated remote control programs. All you need is avast! 7.x on both ends and that's it.
Since the remote access can only be made if you request it it's perfectly safe so you don't have to worry about others sneaking on your computer when you're not around it. You can also terminate a remote connection whenever you want during active remote assistance.
In theory, this will provide a global network of avast! users helping each other without a need to be physically present at the computer with problems. You'll be able to help friends right from your own computer at home.
This feature is available in all versions of avast!.

I'm looking forward to Youtube tests. From what i've tested it during private beta test the results were very good considering it was very much "alpha" version than anything final. Cloud service is connected now and sandbox is supposedly stable enough in the new enhanced form. Streaming updates also help to deliver instant updates for the latest threats every few minutes.

 

Hard to beat Avast Free in features..

 

Is the Reputation Services based on Avast in house and user stats or also some other info? And do you know if there have been improvements with the behavior monitor?

Reputation service is entirely inhouse feature. Considering how many users avast! has, the "database" will be built very quickly imo.

I hope they take away that beehive-like design. It's ugly. Why is it that some software companies feel like they should add nonsense stuff like that to UIs?

avast! 6 had a clean UI. I wonder if they made some survey and avast! users wanted a beehive-like UI?

Now, seriously... Why did you guys feel the need of adding such to the UI? avast! 6 had/has a pleasant and clean UI. Improving other aspect, if needed, sure; but, why adding that beehive/carbon dashboard like UI?

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were saying that avast! 6 UI looks better. (The new one is avast! 7 )

But, will you folks consider an alternative avast! 6 kinda look (without the beehive/carbon dashboard)?

Fair enough. I totally respect other people's opinion/preference.

 

Can't please everyone with a particular theme, and if they tried to please everyone with a changeable theme someone else would complain of bloat. If they left it the same as 6 someone would complain nothing had changed. There is no way to win. Hopefully the majority of people will like it. I think it looks nice.

 

Well, the interface is as it is. If you're using Android you'll see that avast! Mobile Security is using the same theme. It's not THAT different compared to v6. Just few new bits here and there, some new icons and that's pretty much it. Honestly i don't see anything wrong with it.

The placement is very logical and i like the way they don't go the "BIG ICONS" way like everyone else has.

 

Sadly, that's true. Many people simply care about a new look, without caring about the core itself.

Personally, if I ran Microsoft, I'd force software developers to follow the O.S underlying UI.

 

The old mp3 player skin from avast 4.8 with the beehive would be unbeatable

 

Norton has been doing minor GUI changes for years. From Norton AV 2002 up to 2009, there were hardly any drastic changes, just small cosmetic touches. MSE also got just few cosmetic touches. avast! made a huge leap between v4.x and 5.x (mostly because ppl didn't particularly like media player look), but all the new ones only have minor changes which is how the trend goes really. besides, if it ain't broken, don't fix it and most companies go by that rule. Small touch ups are still required in order to make interface fresh.

 

Are the streaming updates also available to the free version?

 

Yes, all the new features (Streaming updates, FileRep, Remote Assistance, new Autosandboxing etc) are available in both free and paid versions.
