AMD unveils Ryzen 4000 Series mobile processors

AMD is most well known for its desktop processors, but the company does make mobile chips too. In fact, some of the best budget Windows 10 laptops are powered by AMD mobile processors. The company’s laptop chips are gaining more respect these days; case in point, Microsoft is finally selling an AMD-powered Surface.

“Featuring up to 8 cores and 16 threads, the AMD Ryzen 4000 U-Series Mobile Processors [...] with a configurable 15W TDP. Additionally, [...] the AMD Ryzen 4000 H-Series Mobile Processors [...] with a configurable 45W TDP,” says Advanced Micro Devices.
AMD further says, “[...] Offering up to 86% faster graphics and up to 51% better productivity performance over the competition systems are slated to be available from global OEMs in early 2020.”

Neowin: AMD introduces Ryzen 4000 mobile, the world's first 7nm x86 notebook processors

The 4000 series will come in U (15W) and H (45W) series, plus Pro series for creatives. The company talked specifically about the high-end Ryzen 4800U, an 8-core, 16-thread CPU with a base clock of 1.8GHz and a boost clock of 4.2GHz.
This processor promises to outperform Intel's Ice Lake competitors, which are built on a 10nm process. [...] it absolutely crushed the Core i7 in multi-threaded performance, with a CineBench score that's 90% higher.

AMD also talked about the Ryzen 4800H, a 45W chip that's aimed at gamers that want desktop-level performance. This chip also has eight cores and 16 threads, but the base clock is 2.9GHz.

AMD has announced its Ryzen Pro 4000 series of mobile business processors. The chips sport new security features and improvements to battery life and performance, according to the company, and are a direct challenge to Intel’s vPro. AMD says the new series aims to create a “new standard for modern business PCs.”

The Pro 4000 series includes three chips: the Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U (eight cores, 16 threads, 1.7GHz base speeds with boost up to 4.1GHz), the Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U (six cores, 12 threads, 2.1GHz base speeds with boost up to 4.0GHz), and the Ryzen 3 Pro 4450U (four cores, eight threads, 2.5GHZ base speeds with boost up to 3.7GHz). The chips are the first business processors based on the company’s 7nm Zen 2 architecture.

The Pro 4000’s primary calling card is security. The chips include a dedicated AMD Secure Processor, which takes advantage of Microsoft secured-core technology to prevent kernel-level attacks and other security threats.
The chips also include AMD’s Pro Manageability. These features take on Intel’s Active Management Technology, which is one of vPro’s biggest draws.

The company is also promising improved battery life. The new chips have improved idle detection (to power down components that aren’t being used), activity detection (to quickly boost up components when they’re needed), and power-state selection (which makes power-state transitions easier). AMD says Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U systems can deliver over 20 hours of battery life.
