Adobe Acrobat Replacement

Hello,

I need to replace Adobe Acrobat with some other program but I don’t know what else to try. I am very uneasy just trying out just any program that I find on the internet and I would greatly appreciate any input that someone would have.

My problem is that I will be changing my systems over to Win 7 from XP Pro (new computer). Adobe Acrobat 9.0 requires you to download the updates in order and install them EXACTLY as they were issued. Just for the record, there are 23 updates that add up to 1322 MB. This, combined with the security issues that Adobe has, has made up my mind that I don’t want this program on my system.

All I need is the ability to do the following:
1. Print to PDF.
2. Combine PDF's into one file. (I don’t need any editing ability except the ability to combine files)

I have researched Foxit's Phamtom PDF and CutePDF Professional. I can only try the trial versions on my XP box right now and I have problems with both. Foxit's program does not always print out my CAD drawings correctly and CutePDF Pro will not install. Again, this is on the XP box and I do not know how they will perform on my Win 7 system when it is set up.

Has anyone used the above programs on Win 7?
Did you have any problems with printing out certain pages?

Again, security is an issue with me and I would appreciate anyone who has experience with a program that has the above features, and let me know what that experience has been.

I only use the freeware version of Tracker Products PDF XChange viewer, so I don't know what the paid version really does. The freeware version is very good though IMO. Either may be worth having a look at.

In our office we replaced acrobat with nitro pdf pro and it worked very nice, not a single issue.

 

+1, Nitro is definitely the way to go

 

Sumatra PDF, light with no frills but it works very well.

i`m using foxit reader (free version). it opens, prints way faster .pdf documents. and doesn`t have all the security holes that adobe has.

The last 5 posts are missing the point. This thread isn't about PDF Readers.

So:

-1 for Sumatra PDF (read the first post of the thread, people!).

+1 for Nitro

 

Based upon my experience and research, two of the best Acrobat alternatives have already been mentioned in this thread:

Nitro Pro and PDF-XChange Pro

They are both reasonably priced (PDF-X is a bit less expensive) and should work for your purposes. In fact, if these two programs don't meet your needs, I highly doubt any other Acrobat alternative will meet them. They are simply two of the best available.

I happen to use PDF-XChange PRO but if I were unable to use it for any reason, I would immediately switch to Nitro.

RANT
It still amazes me that you can not load Adobe Acrobat (ver9) onto a new or recently formatted system and have it download the correct updates. Maybe I should not say anything since I am not a programmer, but this seems to me to be something any program should do.
