For me, anyway, the fact that Android uses the Linux kernel is not something for Linux developers to be proud of.

Dreamworks and Pixar or one of them uses GNU/Linux as workstation. They use Rhel with nvidia cards and make their animations on it.

That's an interesting point of view. I've been thinking the same thing recently.

Linux changed my life when I ditched Windows for Ubuntu. A move I've never regretted. :thumb:

Same. I used Ubuntu, Arch, Parabola, Trisquel and couple of others. And I have been using Debian for a long time.

Had Google not bought the company would you feel the same way?

    Maybe.

It's just that it's become such an anti-user spyware OS.

What about Microsoft W10 and the Linux kernel? Seems kernel will be
compiled by Microsoft & initially be based on version 4.19 of the Linux kernel.

Also from J.Gossman (Microsoft distinguished engineer & Linux foundation board member)
Today we’re pleased to announce that Microsoft is supporting the addition
of Microsoft’s exFAT technology to the Linux kernel.

Linux is open-source, so there's not no way to prevent Microsoft from using it. As long as they respect the licensing.

FAT is a horrible file system. But it's popular enough that having better kernel support is good.

Remember Microsoft for a long time was no friend to open-source.
They have a reputation as an enemy of open-source and now want to
see themselves as "champions of openness". Some see this more as a
forced change because Linux powers majority of web servers & gives
support to the Android mobile OS.

Chromebooks also support Android apps, as Google’s mobile OS is also built on Linux.
Developers could run software from 3 different operating systems at the same time
    on a Chromebook.

One then has to wonder where this leaves Linux distros.
Having a smaller user share developers may move toward
Windows and Chrome if the Linux kernels in those operating systems
    get the same job done.

User-facing programs typically don't use Linux kernel directly, but they use API provided by OS libraries. Gnu/Linux API is mainly in libraries written in C (i.e. GNU libc).

    - E. Niazi quote
(20-year technology veteran - founder of OSS & named OSE CTO)

A Closer Look at the ‘Trojan Horse’ That is exFAT Inside Linux

Summary: Microsoft and its boosters (media insiders) spread the illusion that Microsoft
is “opening up”; the reality, however, is that it’s looking to tighten control over
Linux while at the same time profiting from exFAT patents owing to back room deals.

Care to elaborate. I know there have been negatives to Google such as closing off its applications, but Android the OS continues to be FOSS and developed in the open and has contributed lots to the FOSS eco-system.

@NGRhodes - My main complaint is that it doesn't give owners rights to actually manage their devices, so you get apps doing stuff that users don't want. And, pretty much as a consequence of that, Android devices track users, both online and in meatspace. iOS devices are almost as bad, admittedly. And it's all very sad, given what mobile computers might have become.

Yes. If I'm not mistaken Windows kernel is developed mostly in C, with some parts
in assembly language. Linux is also written mostly in C, with some parts in assembly.

Who really benefits from this Microsoft-Linux partnership?
I would say MS has more to gain than Linux IMO.

Some believe the long term goal is resurgence of embrace-extend-extinguish.

My point was that developers don't use Linux kernel API directly. They use API of libraries that are not part of Linux kernel.
I written about language because for example Android exposes it's Java/Kotlin-based API for programs as a primary API.

Windows 11 will be a DE over a distro.

    Google-free Android?

Creator of Mandrake Linux which later became Mandriva, G. Duval created an open source
OS for smartphones which goes by the name /e/.
The OS strips off possibly every Google code from the AOSP release that can serve as a
    tracking beacon for Google.

Also open source Android alternatives for mobiles.

    Plasma Mobile
    KaiOS
    LineageOS
    PostmarketOS
    Ubuntu Touch
    Tizen OS

Most of them still in the development phase, but one can look at list of supported
devices and see if you can run the Linux-based operating systems on your phone.

Yes, those are all great. But how many people will actually use them?

May depend upon where you live and whether or not your concerned enough about your
privacy & taking more control over these devices. Will large masses of people from around
the world go this route? Most likely not.

The /e/ Foundation says 1,300 users have registered their interest in buying these
refurbished phones after roughly two weeks. Their expectation was between 500 & 1000
in a year. Doesn't mean though, they have sold 1300 units yet.
Phones are available in European markets and soon will add reseller partners to sell /e/ in
    other parts of the world.

Google-free Android refurbished Smartphone models offered:

    Samsung Galaxy S7 w/32GB
    Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge w/32GB
    Samsung Galaxy S9 w/64GB
    Samsung Galaxy S9+ w/64GB
