WinFindr 1.7 has been released. Its main improvements over the previous version are: Greatly improved the support for searching for text inside PDF files. It’s now possible to search for files based on the file attributes. The results list now shows more information about the found items - but you can also choose to see only a minimal amount of information, it’s up to you. The full Changelog is available here: https://winfindr.com/changelog/ Since this is a file searching tool, the number one question is, how does this compare against Everything. In fact, I even wrote an entire page about this: https://winfindr.com/everything-alternative TLDR: Everything is a file and folder search tool while WinFindr can also search for registry data, WinFindr contains native, builtin support for searching for data inside PDF files, WinFindr support natural language searching and also that WinFindr is highly customizable. Everything is great if you want to know where that one file whose filename you remember is located at. WinFindr is great when you want to do more, and you want the search tool to look and work the way you want. WinFindr is freeware, lightweight (about 3 MB), it’s available as a single file portable executable or a setup version and has a builtin support for 29 translations. I'm testing this out. I can definitely see the registry search being useful. Much more useful than searching in regedit. Looking good so far. Edit: It does not prompt for admin on launch but does not work correctly without it.
What do you mean by not working correctly without it? The program doesn't force admin rights by design, to allow also non-admin users to use it. In this mode, it will naturally only find data that can be found by non-admin users. If you want it to run with admin rights, you can set that via Windows Right Click > Properties and always run as admin.
It seems Windows is not allowing the non-admin process to write to disk. I would recommend you to use the Right Click > Properties option to tell Windows to always run it as admin. The program doesn't automatically do this (i.e. force admin level access), because many users don't want this to happen. This way when the program runs as a normal user level program, the user can decide whether it should be run as an admin or not.
It's easy enough to change the shortcut properties to always run as admin which is most likely the way I would run it. I was just reporting this as it does it every time it is run as a standard user. Didn't know if you wanted to do anything to address it (change the save location, suppress the error, etc.) as some users may perceive this to be something wrong with the program. It does run the search after dismissing the error.
I agree, I will find a way to reproduce this issue and fix it for the next version. Thank you for letting me know!
If you buy the Pro version, it supports the product's development. There are no feature limitations in the free version.
I have only tried the portable version, which I have read is the same as the setup version. For the setup version, I think to make a search tool really handy, it needs to provide an option for a tray icon to make it easily accessible. I wouldn't want that on the portable version though, unless it was an optional setting.
WinFindr 1.8 has been released. Its main improvements over the previous version are: Two new natural language search modes: Similar word matching and phonetic matching. You can now have WinFindr to stay running in the tray area as an icon, and configure it to start automatically with Windows. Improved compatibility with screen readers and other accessibility features. The full Changelog is available here: https://winfindr.com/changelog/ More information and download link available here: https://winfindr.com/
This feature has now been added to the version 1.8. This was a great idea, thank you very much for this! This feature is also now included in the just released version.
Sorry but... Just downloaded 1.8 and installed. Ran the program without elevating. Entered a search term and clicked Start. Got this message. I like it but it would be nice to see this resolved. I assume you're writing something to the WinFindr.dat file in the installation directory? Can't do that without admin. You might want to put it in the user profile if this is what is happening.
That's odd. I cannot reproduce this in any system that I tried. I will try to fix this again for the next version. Thank you for letting me know!
It gets weirder. If I delete the WinFindr.dat file from the installation directory and run as standard user it runs without error. If I put the file back it gives the error again. Not having it there doesn't seem to stop it from functioning. I don't know how much that helps but it appears to me that this file is the issue. Makes no sense to me. Good luck figuring this out. If there's anything you want me to try let me know. Edit: I gave that file full permission to the users group and the error goes away. Definitely a permission issue with that file. Edit 2: I tried this on second Windows 11 PC, same results.

Thank you for reporting! I think I got it fixed now, the fix will be included to the next version. If you wish to continue to use the program before that, you can use the mentioned workaround, or use the Portable version from a directory where non admin user has write access. I am indeed.
