Ubuntu popularity dropping

On that note, Debian is the most popular distro since Ubuntu and Mint are based on that...

I much prefer Mint over Ubuntu - it feels more like a distro that tries to adapt itself to what people want, as opposed to Ubuntu which tries to change people to adapt to how it wants them to work. I'm not currently using Mint, but I give it a hearty thumbs up.

 

Not every Linux user in the world visits DistroWatch you know. One of the dudes who created PepperMint, and is actually a developer and moderator at Mint's forum, said in a post (at PepperMint Forum) that Ubuntu's popularity among users worldwide is tenfold over what is reflected at DistroWatch. So take DistroWatch's rankings with a grain of salt. I'm sure Ubuntu is still number one worldwide.

In my opinion, Mint is playing an opportunist to the dissatisfaction with Unity among Ubuntu users. I don't think it's a case of "listening to its users" at all. That's why they stayed with the old interface in Mint 11. But since change was inevitable Mint decided to go with gnome-shell rather than Unity for Mint 12. Can't say I really blame him. I wouldn't have included Mate in Mint 12 Final though for it's really not ready for prime-time. It kept crashing on me and was hardly functional. But, again, he, Clem, is playing the opportunist.

Dang! I was getting used to backing the underdog.

 

I've seen similar statements in so many places.

It's really remarkable that at least one venture has found the solution to keeping everybody happy. If that magic sauce is applied elsewhere we may end up having World Peace rather soon.

I used to feel that Ubuntu had potential but the Unity thing ended if for me also. Looking forward to giving Mint 12 a test run this week.
