I understand that this will end up replacing SMS and MMS. It is run through Google servers instead of your own provider. Do most of you use it now instead of SMS ?
After Signal dropped SMS support I switched "temporarily" to Google Messages. I tried to not use RCS, but frankly it was nagging me so many times that I don't know. Theoretically RCS should become a standard eventually and be provided by CSPs instead of Google, but I think telco doesn't care at this point about it, because most people switched to OTT such as WhatsApp, iMessage or Signal
