Great article! And indeed, as expected the Read WSJ Extension was removed from the Chrome Extensions pages. I wonder if there is a place where one can still download it, does such a repository of 'politically incorrect' extensions exist?

Running Chrome12, I never installed BitDefender QuickScan extension, yet it's running as a default plugin.
Is that because of either AdBlock or Click&Clean that I do have installed?
I'm thinking it is there to do default scans of page loads, but a user must install the extension in order to run on-demand quick scans.
    Any thoughts?

It comes with Click&Clean. I believe it only scans running processes, memory, limited areas of the hard disc.

I have it installed separately for occasional second opinions.

I have now installed it separately as well, like you, for a 2nd opinion.
This is an unusual scan dialog...

I just began using Ghostery, with blocking enabled.
Has anyone noticed any slowdown with this?
And I know I don't have to have the alert bubble enabled, but having just started using the extension, it's informative to see what it is doing.
I wish the alert bubble would disappear by mousing over it.
That would be a small enhancement.

No slowdown at all, but it is only partially functional. In the Chrome version, you don't get the option to use the cookie list and many trackers sail right through it. You'll see a red number under the ghost icon a lot, meaning it didn't block properly. If you click on the icon though, it'll pull up a list of trackers on that page, so the bubble isn't necessary. You can also click on an individual tracker that is listed and get much more detailed info about it.

    Good info... thank you.
Have you enabled bug list auto-updating?
    I haven't.
    Just did it manually.
I may 86 the alert bubble after a little while.
    :)

Yep, I let it auto-update. I'd forget to update something like that :D

""Everyone I've talked to has turned it [the Google service] off. They don't want to be tracked," he says."

    What a bunch of idiots.

Yeah, let's turn off the ability to be told we're headed into dangerous waters because Google might know more about us..but let's keep our Gmail accounts, head over to Google+ and so on, because they're just plain awesome!...sadly that is probably the way they think. Google and plenty of other companies already know more than you probably want to think about, why bother turning off the one thing that actually helps you?o_O Anyway, just strap on a tracker blocker or something and move on.

I'm going to give Adblock a try (Not Adblock Plus). I tried Adblock Plus for a while, but using way too much RAM to my taste.

    I'll see how Adblock fairs.

Are you using the readymade filters or are you using your own?

BTW, all the best with "Adblock". Never used it. Never will.

32-38k for me (ABP) I guess it depends on the number of lists. ABP performed better (about as well as can be expected on Chrome). I did use Adblock for a long time though and it worked almost as good. I'm not sure how much of a ram difference you'll see. But who knows :)

The organisation behind Ghostery is now called Evidon. I wonder what they mean by 'increased transparency'?

Probably that they want more companies to have clear privacy policies and to make them public. There was a lot of noise made when Evidon took over, which is understandable considering the kind of program Ghostery is. They've been running it a while now, and so far the sky hasn't fallen.

Are there any full working ghostery alternative. Ghostery is leaky!

Anyone try The Ultimate Aye for Chrome. According to their description it:

    *Prevents unwanted content from loading
    *Blocks Ads and Ad Elements
    *Blocks Malware Domains
    *Protects your personal data
*Blocks Images(with user choose):*.gif, *png, *jpg, *jpeg etc
*Blocks Multimedia Content(with user choose):*.swf, *.flv, *mp3 etc

Curious if it's any better than Adblock Plus.

My gut feeling after looking at the WebStore page and the various comments (99% glowing testimonials, as they say) would be to wait (and wait). Let some other intrepid persons try it first :)
