In terms of security which one is better? Is there any difference between the two?

I know that Yahoo Mail strips out potentially dangerous scripting code from messages, but does Gmail do the same thing?

I've studied Gmail's Preferences and there doesn't seem to be any security options, such as blocking images, etc.

heres some security measures gmail does take:

*blocks images in messages (you can view teh images or even whitelist teh sender so youll always see images)
*does not execute javascript in message
*scans attachments for viruses (both sending and receiving)
*disallows sending and receiving of executable files

So it appears as if Gmail is more secure.

Google Mail also has an extremely powerful spam and virus filter . I don't know how they do it but it catches all the SPAM , I receive on average 20 spams everyday and it gets everything .

I second that. Rarely i get 1 spam message. Maybe once a week or month.

I find the idea of having all my emails stored forever (Gmail) reprehensible.

My common sense & computer security knowledge can keep me secure from those security concerns raised. Just not from Gmail storing emails forever.

It depends on what you use it for.
But yes, it is a little uncomfortable, even if nothing important is there.

AFAIK , You can use GMail as a "server" , place to load files . For example there is a Firefox extensions which allows you use your ~2.8 Gb to upload your important stuff there and keep it handy worldwide :thumb:

Yes but that doesn't allay my concerns.

Who do they use for virus scanning?

So I assume someone could still send/receive an executable if they zipped it up.

The rumor is that Google uses Sophos engine. I think that they use a multi-engine approach.
I guess not. If you want to send executables, zip and password-protect them.

    Excellent info! Thanks guys!

Does anyone know why I can't view the source of a message in Gmail?

Do they have caching disabled? o_O

Sorry, I meant the page source. To view the HTML, etc. :)

I'm using IE 6.0, and it either comes up blank or nothing comes up at all.

    Nice blog.
But that with renaming the file did not work.
I renamed an exe, lets say test.exe, to test.xyz, put it in a pw protected zip and still got the message that exe are not allowed... how the hell did google figure out it was an exe?

Thanks! I just realized that clicking on "Show Original" also shows the original HTML markup of the message as well as the full headers.

Sorry if I originally misunderstood your post. ;)
