Free Security Suite

I have a new notebook with Windows XP. I want to install free security applications.
I decided to try this:

Resident:
Avira AntiVir free
Online Armor free

On demand:
SuperAntispyware

Is it good?

I want to see your opinions...

I will suggest ThreatFire( and possibly a sandbox as well). SAS is not needed I think.

....and I will suggest adding Returnil. Very light and straightforward for safe web surfing sessions. Just turn Session Lock on before going on the web and if you encounter nasties at all in that session, they are gone on reboot.

Bear in mind though, ALL changes are gone (i.e downloads).

The latest beta has more functionality for file saving etc but for everyday surfing 1.7 is fine.

 

I use exactly the same setup on my XP machine, except with the Premium version of Avira.
I personally think that is enough and adding more will just be a waste for the average user. As long as you take care with what you open, etc. I am sure you will be fine.
Those programs seem to work very well together, no conflicts, very light, etc. and adding more security apps will just increase the chances of conflicts and possibly cause a slow down.

You can add a sandbox like GeSWall free but this is already a good setup

What are you using as "threatgate" (browser, email client ....) ?

Sounds Like strong set up to me and good products your using.

 

Looks like a good set up. I would also recommend Spywareblaster. You can find it here. I also would recommend Geswall or Sandboxie. What browser do you use? You could allways try Firefox or Opera!

 

See the remarks in bold. For extra speed/security. Try Opera with the IE skins (look for vista_skin-2 and google for some extra Opera buttons like history, menu, add to favourites). You run Opera, but won't notice the difference with IE7

 

Your setup is fine.

Non Suite needs: Firefox with appropriate add-ons, Mailwasher Free or equivalent (for pop3 account users).

I use some of this already - I'm just putting on paper a "Wilders approved" free suite. Something beyond minimal but not too deep.

I don't see any problems with your setup. Its definitely a beyond minimal setup and would probably be beyond the average user.
